Pomona City Council is back
After a monthlong break, the Pomona City Council is back in action today, and you can practically smell the excitement. I think that's what the smell is.
Should be another big night for The Issue That Would Not Die, i.e., police traffic checkpoints, with protesters and counter-protesters and, for all I know, counter-counter-protesters showing up. Even though the checkpoint discussion is actually scheduled for 5 p.m., I expect a full house, several TV cameras inside and a lot of chanting outside.
Having sat through several of these unwinnable arguments about race and immigration, suddenly the last lines of Matthew Arnold's "Dover Beach" come to mind:
And we are here as on a darkling plain
Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,
Where ignorant armies clash by night.

A journalist for more than two decades, David Allen has been writing a column for the

Hey there, Mr. Simpson! It sure is nice of you to cover my favorite city of Springfield. Always fun to hear about our city council even though School Board news from Shelbyville has been more exciting.
You've already been cast as town crier Homer Simpson and it'll be interesting to see who ends up playing Mayor Quimby by the end of the year. Chief Wiggum (unfairly) would already be cast as well.
There are other characters in the list that need portraying --
Lisa, Bart, Milhouse, Marge, Moe (can't have a drinking/driving discussion without it leading to Moe's Tavern), Otto, Barney, Carl, Lenny, Groundskeeper Willie, Principal Skinner, Nelson, Martin, and the Bumblebee Guy.
Then again, the council meeting could just be one large Itchy and Scratchy flick.
I hope you won't mind if I cast myself as Ralph since he's Springfield's version of a Stupid Happy Idiot.
Cheers!

I can think of another book. "Where there be weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth" Matthew 13:42
Maybe the police should set up a checkpoint at the door to the council chambers. It should be verified that the folks who wish to comment/protest are actually citizens of Pomona. Or at least here legally. Oh, wait. Police aren't allowed to check for immigration status. Never mind.
TV cameras? Be sure to stand behind any reporters and wave to us.
Unwinnable? Nah. The law's the law. No one should be privileged. Drunk? No license? No insurance? Don't drive. (Yeah, I'm feeling snarky 'cause I recently paid the $150.00+ installment for my auto insurance.)
Ignorant armies? Not the entire army. Just some of the soldiers.
I don't believe the issue can ever be resolved to everyone's satisfaction. The best we can hope for is that the "discussion" doesn't end in violence.
And let's not forget that we are privileged to live in a country where such protests are allowed.
Can't wait to see how this shakes out.
Ramona
God help us.
The meeting will probably be just another in a series of embarrassing black eyes to Pomona.
People will be protesting for their unalienable right to drive without a license huh?
[With the other side yammering about federal matters over which Pomona has no control, yes. Like I said, unwinnable. -- DA]
Hi David,
It's 7:15pm and there's a lot of people outside. Some teenagers came into the library this evening saying they were stars because they were just interviewed on TV. (I didn't break the news that TV is edited and they might not make it.)
I hope you are safe in there! There are a lot of police around the area. Also two fire trucks and an emt.
It's interesting sometimes working in Pomona! (The best library in the area...)
[It was actually a fairly calm meeting. -- DA]
Maybe if California had the same law Missouri does, must show proof of citizenship/legal status to get a driver license, plus NO sancturary cities, employers fined or jailed for knowingly hiring illegal aliens, the city might be better.
Unlicensed drivers, drivers without insurance, raise everyones insurance rates. In Mo. driving on suspended or revoked license (3rd for suspended) is a felony, resulting in prison time. Wake up California, anyone drinking and driving, unlicensed, no insurance, is a hazard. No matter what the race, where they are from, native or not.
[Uh-huh. I like how your last sentence contradicts the entire thrust of your note. -- DA]
HA ha

I thought it said "excrement"
