Wednesday column preview

| | Comments (2) |

Did you see the Bangles, Motels and Berlin in concert at the Fair last Friday? I did, and that '80s flashback is my first item Wednesday.

From there we get into Monday's Pomona council meeting, specifically, the move to rename Madison Park. The founding fathers get no respect. Also, a councilman responds, in a surprising way, to Sunday's column about his cell phone use. Look for all this in Wednesday's paper and online.

David,

As a music lover I can't believe that you attributed Hazy Shade of Winter to The Bangles. While I LOVE their cover of the song, it was originally a Simon & Garfunkel song on the Bridge Over Troubled Waters album.

I can't listen to either version without, at the end, going directly into At The Zoo (I'm afraid I wore the grooves out of that particular album).

Just remember "Orangutans are skeptical of changes in their cages and the zookeeper is very fond of rum" and "there's a patch of snow on the ground."

["At the Zoo" is so bad it's almost good. As for "Hazy," a far better song, I made sure to avoid attributing the song to anyone (and thereby avoid cluttering up the sentence) by writing "the Bangles' opening song, 'Hazy Shade of Winter.'" For the record (har), the S&G version, and "At the Zoo," are on "Bookends," not "Bridge." -- DA]

That'll teach me to check my facts. Of course it was Bookends. It wasn't my LP but my college roommate's that I wore out.

[If you're going to wear out an LP, it's smart to wear out somebody else's. Oh, and thanks for checking the blog twice in one day, John! -- DA]
