An arty movie lineup
Now playing at Claremont's Laemmle 5: Perhaps the artiest lineup yet. This week's movies are "Slumdog Millionaire," "Milk," "Australia," "A Christmas Tale" (from France, starring Catherine Deneuve) and "I've Loved You So Long" (also from France, starring Kristin Scott Thomas).
If you want Laemmle to play sophisticated fare in Claremont, this would be a good week to vote with your pocketbook.

Hi David, After viewing "Slumdog Millionaire," I looked up the website at home and was aghast to see it classified as a comedy. Nothing funny about it at all -- it is heartwrenching -- a very good movie.
"Australia" is a western-type story with romance, so if people expect great expanses of Australian scenery and wildlife they will be disappointed (there is one scene with kangaroos). Hugh Jackman deserves his new "People" magazine title, and the little boy will steal your heart.
In "Milk" Sean Penn is fantastic. He is a shoo-in for "Oscar" nod.
I saw "Slumdog Millionaire" at the Claremont Laemmle last weekend, and it was great. I recommend it.
We went to Laemmle this afternoon to see "Slumdog Millionaire." That showing was sold out so we saw the French film "I've Loved You So Long." We both enjoyed it. Great story and very well acted. Go see it, you won't be sorry.
[I saw "Slumdog" on Sunday afternoon and nearly every seat was taken. Good movie. -- DA]
There is only one day remaining for the two French films at the Laemmle. As you said before, it is time for those who wanted only foreign and independent films to vote with their pocketbooks.
I could not decide which of the two French films to see yesterday. The synopsis of "Christmas Tale" paints a lot of family dysfuntion in almost three hours. "I've Loved You So Long"'s synopsis sounded like a lot of family dsyfunction too, but shorter. I chose the latter, and am so glad I did. Kristin Scott Thomas does not disappoint.
[After checking the schedule online this week and seeing that "Slumdog Millionaire" will be there through Dec. 31, I wish I'd have seen "...So Long" instead. -- DA]
Go today, David. You will not be sorry.
[I can't. I'm seeing the L.A. Phil in Pomona tonight. (Really.) -- DA]
Well David, Another foreign movie is playing at the Laemmle: "Waltz with Bashir" (excellent animated film from Israel),
It looks like those who had complained about the Laemmle's dearth of foreign films are still not serious about voting with their pocketbooks. The showing I saw was attended by seven people.
[I saw a Sunday matinee of "Bashir" and it was better attended, although the theater was still probably two-thirds empty. Very good film. -- DA]
