Fox cake

The anniversary of Pomona's Fox Theater was Friday, the first night of the Smogdance Film Festival and the first public event at the restored theater. The theater opened April 24, 1931, or 78 years to the day earlier.

To mark the occasion, three Fox-themed cakes were displayed and two of them were cut into during the festival's intermission. Everyone who wanted a slice got one. (My cheap friend Pat took two.)

I'm told the cakes were made by New York Delight, a nearby deli and caterer. The cake pictured above was the one that wasn't cut into. Not sure where it went although I watched from across the street as it was carried out by two people.

Maybe it's in someone's freezer and will be wheeled out on April 24, 2087, 78 years to the day of the reopening.

They overbought on cake so the extra one was sent to a Pomona church tag sale to be cut up & sold there the next day.

Aren't you supposed to put a piece of cake under your pillow for good luck? Or does that just apply to wedding cake?

Grousing aside, it sounds like a very fitting opening night for a very special part of Pomona's history. I kinda wish I could have been there.

[For the sake of posterity, the piece I had (I don't know if both cakes were the same) was chocolate with white frosting. -- DA]

Any idea what's happening to the Mayfair Hotel across the street? I haven't been there in a while, but the last time I was there, it was fenced off and looked like it was being worked on. Ancient news? Probably. But, I just don't know anything about it. :) Thanks!

[It's no longer fenced off but no longer being worked on as the owner lost control of it last year due to financing issues. Too bad. -- DA]
