Restaurant of the Week: Los Portales

Los Portales, 10244 Central Ave. (at Kingsley), Montclair.

I’d seen Los Portales for ages in the strip center behind the estimable Cafe Montclair, but hadn’t yet gone in. That is, until looking for a new place to eat before Monday’s Montclair council meeting and finding most restaurants on Central closed, Mondays being what they are. Los Portales it is!

I was pleasantly surprised how large the interior is and how nice it looked. There were at least four dining rooms and the one where I was seated had banquette seating, those wooden booths with high backs. Chips, salsa and a menu were quickly delivered. The place was moderately busy.

The menu has plenty of seafood and steak dishes in the $10 to $15 range. Not having time to linger, I opted for the fish taco plate, grilled ($9.95). The two tacos had at least an entire filet between them, more fish than Rubio’s would put in a half-dozen tacos, plus some cabbage, diced tomatoes and cilantro on corn tortillas. Double tortillas would have made the tacos easier to eat, but I felt like I got my money’s worth. The plate also came with beans and rice. A horchata ($2.25) washed it down well.

My first impression of Los Portales is positive and it may be one of the valley’s better Mexican restaurants. Anyone else been there? Do any of you know the location’s history?

Have been to Los Portales a few times and it’s pretty good, not quite as good as Pueblita in Upland. I wouldn’t bypass Cafe Montclair to get to Los Portales…unless it was a Monday.

Being Mexican myself I don’t eat at many Mexican restaurants but this is by far the best. Sunday morning menudo is a must!

The best Mexican food restaurant. Their food is better than El Pescador. The food does not drown in cooking oil or grease.

We drive down to Los Portales at least once a week from Upland. Yes, there are plenty of other places to stop in between, but in our opinion Los Portales can’t be beat!

Their green sauce on enchiladas and chilaquiles is THE BEST and yes their Sunday menudo is also great. Shrimp ceviche and fish tacos are delicious. Never had anything on the menu that I didn’t like. The chips are always served quickly and usually warm and the salsa is perfect — not too hot or too mild.

The staff is always friendly, even when they are REALLY busy. Try it — it may become your favorite, too!

My friends and I love Los Portales! We consider ourselves amateur burrito aficionados, and it is our opinion that the Portales provides the best Inland Valley burrito. We used to frequent the amazing Xochimilco in Pomona until its lamentable closing. We then searched desperately for a replacement, and after a few bad burritos, we happened upon the Portales, and we’ve been happy and content ever since!

There is also a Los Portales in Chino at Walnut and Central (two doors down from the Big Lots). This is an outlet of the Montclair restaurant. Had the chicken enchiladas with green sauce last night and it was good.

[Didn't know there was a Chino outpost. Thanks for the info, Charles. -- DA]
