Now here’s some Chino trivia!

A couple of times recently in my column I’ve razzed the city of Chino for its brief, lame collection of trivia to celebrate, in wan fashion I must say, its centennial.

Al McCombs, owner of the Chino Champion newspaper, picked up the gauntlet and concocted his own Chino quiz for his “Rolltop Roundup” column in Saturday’s paper. I have to confess I couldn’t get a single answer correct. But I learned a lot. And I was tickled by McCombs’ hands-across-the-valley plug for my column.

    You want trivia?

    Where did Richard Gird make his money?

    He owned a silver mine in Tombstone.

    He was, also, a co-founder of the Tombstone Mining District and a friend of the Earp brothers, all before he came to Chino.

    His house was located where the Lake Los Serranos clubhouse now stands.

    Al McCombs agrees that the trivia from Chino is “bland,” and therefore attempts to rectify the situation with tidbits about street names and the relative tenure of local politicians.

    I think he missed the point.

    Al McCombs’ column is the first thing I turn to in the Champion each week. It boggles my mind that he’s been working with the Champion since the 1950′s. And now his column has somehow crossed internet streams with your blog! My head explodes.

    I’ll agree with Bob above that the local politicians’ tenures are probably only interesting to the politicians and their families, but I liked the trivia about the street names. Maybe you have to live here to find that interesting (granting that I don’t know where Bob lives).

    Oh dear Chino, such a cute little town. Their Dutch, Basque and Portugese history is legendary. Just wish the dairies would have stayed and the prison moved away!
