A new Panera Bread location opens in La Verne this morning in the old Michael J's location. (Here's a photo after the demolition.)

Address: 2315 Foothill Blvd. (at Fruit Street), across from the giant McDonald's. Regular hours: Monday to Saturday, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sundays 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Menu: Soups, salads, sandwiches, coffee, artisanal bread and free WiFi.

Other area locations are Rancho Cucamonga, Chino Hills and West Covina.

I think they were actually open yesterday (Monday). I drove by to see if there was any activity, and there was a line out to the parking lot -- 30, 40 people maybe. Apparently their opening has been very eagerly anticipated!

It may have helped if they placed the "NOW OPEN" banner facing Foothill Blvd...not the parking lot!

Yesterday was for "Friends and Family" only -- invite required.

I got so excited to see the line outside when I went into Marshalls during the lunch hour. As I emerged an hour or so later I scurried over only to see the Friends and Family note on the door. And a guest outside told another hopeful would-be patron that it was invite only and the Grand Opening was Tuesday. Bummer -- guess I'll have to try it out on another Monday when I am in La Verne.

Dave, I shop at the Stater Bros at Falcon Ridge in Fontana off the 15 freeway and Summit, I believe a Panera bread is in the shopping center also?

[You're correct. I even ate there once. -- DA]

It is truly amazing that the new building is up and running so quickly after demolition of Michael J's in April. See, there are some things that America can do very well.
