Did you hear about the 1965 Volkswagen bus stolen in 1974, found in 2009 and recently returned to its owner in Spokane?

The Wall Street Journal's version, forwarded by reader Will Plunkett, notes that in its months of legal limbo, "The van sat in a Copart.com warehouse in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif."

This is wild. The thieves evidently considered the van too valuable to break down into separate parts. They probably spent several years enjoying it. I doubt if there will ever be any punishment enacted. I wonder if the owner had received an insurance settlement. If so, it probably has to be paid back.

My sister-in-law's Toyota pickup was stolen from our driveway in 1996. Six weeks later, it was discovered being driven, with new license plates, in Ontario. By then, my sister-in-law had been paid by the insurance company and had a new car.

My 1987 Nissan Maxima was stolen from the Metrolink station in 1999. A very traumatic experience. It looked like new, and had only 70,000 miles on it. I had a digital-entry door system, and had kept a spare key in the glove compartment (don't say it--I know). The car was never seen again. I always wonder if someone is driving it in Mexico--my husband says he bets it became parts the day it vanished. That is too sad.

Now, if someone could just turn up my grandmother's wedding ring, 18K gold, engraved in 1902, that the burglar took from our home in 1997, I would be so happy.

Back in the mid to late 70s I had moved to Seattle with my husband. The people across the street had a van from the florist (it has been so long that the name escapes me)...the one that use to be on Holt, a little bit west of Park Ave. I thought it was neat to look out my living room window and see a little remembrance of Pomona, but I always wondered if it was stolen.
