Not a churchmouse

Reader Maria Tello, who contributes the above photo, is puzzled by the turtle outside Bethel Congregational United Church of Christ at Euclid Avenue and F Street in Ontario.

“Is he a greeter? Perhaps reminding churchgoers that slow and steady wins the race? Maybe he draws in the younger crowd, looking to ride a tortoise?” she asks.

Or draws in the older crowd who identifies with the tortoise, perhaps?

Perhaps it’s an allusion to the Buddhist aphorism “It’s turtles all the way down.”

From the Bible: And the voice of the turtle is heard in our land — Canticles 2:12. While usually interpreted as referring to the turtledove (bird), it is sometimes associated with an actual turtle. Just a guess from a no-church sinner.

Indeed. More than anyone ever needs to hear, here: http://www.quijano.net/tq/turtlesounds.html

I went to preschool here and this turtle was in the sandbox. My dad has a picture of me on it somewhere.
