Mural Benjamin

The first public mural since the adoption of Pomona’s public art ordinance, the above piece was completed in August by artist David Flores and depicts Karl Benjamin, the late Claremont painter, who died in July at age 86 and who had approved the mural. It’s on the west side of the Pomona Billiards building at 400 W. Second St., which dates to 1911.

The mural is beautiful. I look at every day from the window my loft/gallery upstairs in the M&M Electric building. David Flores was amazing to watch work. My daughter (7) and one of the other neighborhood kids (7) even had the chance to help paint a little as well. We can’t wait for more murals and public art to come out of the new public art ordinance. Kudos to Andi Campognone and Alex Couwenberg for bringing such a brilliant and inspiring piece to our neighborhood.
