Column: In dish vote, the doughnut ran away with the poll

Somehow, Glendora’s Donut Man beat out such L.A. heavyweights as Philippe’s, Langer’s, California Pizza Kitchen and even In-N-Out in an online poll to determine L.A.’s iconic food, sponsored by KCET. I chat with a surprised but pleased Jim Nakano, the Donut Man himself, in Friday’s column.

See the whimsical voting brackets here, and if you’ve got 26 minutes, you can watch Huell Howser’s visit to the Donut Man (and for 56 minutes, his Philippe’s segment) here.

David, I remember you writing about this place before and I was curious. But today you have pictures!! That got me wanting to go there and surprised yet again that I’m retired, I went! That strawberry doughnut was THE BEST doughnut I ever had. EVER. I usually don’t like the sickening sweet syrup that you get on strawberry pie. This was NOTHING like that! It was perfect strawberry and perfect doughnut. Did I mention it was THE BEST doughnut I ever had?? Thanks for your write up and pictures!

But tell us, confidentially: Did you like it?

DAVID!!! I must have left out the part that it was the BEST doughnut I ever had. :)

If you wake up surprised to still be retired and find yourself craving a doughnut, go back for the No. 2 seller, the Tiger Tail. Might be the second BEST you’ll have.

            I’ll do it!

I like tiger appendages even more than bear appendages!

My friend who is big foodie came out to visit me in Cucamonga. On the way out she stopped at donut man for “life changing” donuts. After consuming them when she got here they just OK. It was not the first time I had them and I thought they were just OK. These days with real pastry chefs churning out donuts you can get some very high quality very very tasty donuts in LA, but they will not be cheap. So the point I am trying to get across you might feels these were the best you be ever had but there will be others in LA that will blow donutman away. There is some seriously very good and creative donuts out there.

The last super good donut I had was pistachio lemon thyme glazed. I remember the scent was intoxicating. The fresh lemon scent with thyme invigorated your senses with the subtle sweetness and dough as a compliment. The glaze was balanced sweetness that did not overwhelm the lemon and soft dough. Donuts have gone gourmet.

Just in time too since the strawberry doughnuts go out of season this weekend, he will have peach doughnuts now

      • davidallen909

Generally true, but the peach season lasted about three weeks and strawberry just kept on going.

The picture didn’t show whipped cream. You need to add a couple spoonfuls of lite Cool Whip, and it will be an ultra delight.
We still see the Huel programs on KCET, and I always feel like crying. He was the optimum picture of health, vitality, and enthusiasm! There will never be another Huel Howser!

    • davidallen909

You’ll have to bring your own Cool Whip, Shirley.

If double double was on the list donut man would have been slaughtered. Their donuts has been on my b mind for some time and after learning about their last donutsv for the season from DA, my plan was to cycle out there from rancho. However a sore throat kept me home that morning. Until next year before the donut will come.

Strawberries are usually back in February or March, so your wait won’t be terribly long.
