Column: Avila stirs up furor at Ontario council meeting

Ontario CC 007

An especially entertaining, if horrible, council meeting took place in Ontario this week. You can read about that in Friday’s column. I have to say, Ontario is making Upland look good in comparison. Above, spurned appointee Nicola Ricci addresses the council; visible from left, Paul Avila, Jim Bowman and Paul Leon.

It seems wierd to me that an individual councilperson appoints a citizen to the planning commission and then also has the power to individually fire that citizen. I think those things are done by the whole Council in my town.

Some cities handle it collectively and some individually.

I’ve seen some wild things at city council meetings before but this one ranks high. I appreciate the summary of the scandal, but was there any particular reason nothing was mentioned about the public comment session? There are some pretty important issues going on.

There was a separate story about that in Thursday’s paper. It was too serious not to break out into its own story. Including it in my column would have trivialized it, I think.

OK, thank you! I hadn’t seen it in the print edition but I found the online version.

Glad you found it. In print, it ran across the top of A3 on Thursday.

The whole story brings back memories of this persons antics while seated on the school board. He’s like an accident you come upon on the road. You know, where you are unsettled by the event, but just can’t stop looking. He’s outrageous, doing and saying things that no normal, educated, mature elected official would do in public. He lowers the bar for proper behavior, and unfortunately, any “good works” he might attempt will always be negatively colored by his disrespectful name calling.

It looks to me that there is something, “mental”, happening here! I don’t know if his family has tried to help, but if not they should. As to the
voters in Ontario–this is on you!

  • Bob Terry

DA, I told you weeks ago that he was a loose cannon and a mo-ron. And as I also stated, it were ignorant voters, or more likely very “race inclined” voters that put him in office. I’m sure nobody is more happy to see this circus than the city officials in Upland.

      I’ll bet you’re right!

dito – it’s embarrassing for City of Ontario. Very, unprofessional. And I feel Paul Leon, as Mayor, has done his utmost at controlling his frustration, etc.

LOL. Some senior citizens may remember an actor, Peter Lorre. That’s who Avila makes me think of (similar in looks and voice). It has become annoying to listen to him on the TV; mumbling, talking incessantly and without conveying his idea/issue, etc.
