Column: His mission: explore San Juan Capistrano

On a recent day off, I took a day trip by train to San Juan Capistrano. (Three hours there, three hours back, $23.) While there (six hours), I toured the Los Rios District and Mission San Juan Capistrano. It was a fun, informative outing, and the tale is told in Wednesday’s column. Have you been to SJC? What were your impressions?

Above, the other side of the tracks is quite nice; both sides are. Below, a view inside the Serra Chapel.

Our family went to Capistrano a few times when I was a kid, usually to see the swallows who did return back then. I’ve been a couple times as an adult, although not for several years. Six hours traveling time sounds pretty daunting. The last time I made the trip, we drove to Fullerton and took the train south from there.

And that’s a good plan. From the west end it’s a straighter shot to drive to the OC than to train to LA and then train south. I liked the novelty of the new-to-me route and stations.

So for you (at least this time) it was as much about the journey as it was about the destination. That’s cool!

Could Metro make the schedule a little more difficult! It sounds like a lovely trip–I would not mind the length, but would like such journey to begin after 9:00 a.m. Mushroom mac and cheese–sounds yummy! Not so sure about duck “something”–did you need reservations at that restaurant? (I did see the SJC Mission about 40 years ago. There were six of us including my family of four and my parents. It was free–we would not have been able to pay $9 each.)

We had reservations, and while I don’t know if they were required, they came in handy at a small, busy restaurant.

On Saturdays, there’s a 10:50 departure from Union Station on the OC Line that gets you to SJC at 12:13, a reasonable way to go:

Thank you. I had not even looked at Sat.- It would even be possible to stay until 6:11 and take a Metrolink home–who-hoo!

Metrolink has cheap fares on the weekend too. $10 per day. You cannot drive there and back for less.

Thank you. I was just checking on that-I usually get the senior pass which is cheaper than a $10 day pass on the weekend. But with the usual senior pass I would have to purchase another round-trip ticket for the Orange County line. With the $10 day pass I would be able to transfer to the next rail line for free. Another “woo-hoo”! (I do not drive freeways any more.)

I see there is no mac and cheese available at Ramos House on Saturday. A $44 brunch is not in my budget and not necessary for my culinary habits. So another plan is in the works–get to LA for lunch and take the 2:00 p.m. train to SJC. Plenty of time to tour the Mission.
