Column: Museum of Neon Art is a real gas

I took a day trip to the Museum of Neon Art in Glendale (via public transit, natch) and report back, with photos, in Friday’s column. In print, it’s on A1 with three of my photos!

I also visited the one on Olympic after it opened. I was disappointed to see such a small exhibition at the time. It is becoming a lost art, evidently–if there are neon displays at businesses, it makes the look of the neighborhood. My hometown movie theater had the glitziest neon marquee in WY and I have been so frustrated that nobody knows what happened to it. It probably went to a crush yard. It would have made quite a show in any neon museum. Anyway, the Midway sign also operated in my lifetime–I will have to save my nostalgia for a visit to Glendale.

Ideally, yeah, there’d be a large space with high ceilings to accommodate a large number of large signs — but that doesn’t seem feasible financially, alas.
