Column: ‘War of the Worlds’ opera leaves us saucer-eyed

I took in the buzzed-about opera version of “The War of the Worlds,” which used parking lots, air raid sirens and Disney Hall in an unusual, fun production at multiple sites. I write about it in Friday’s column. Watch the skies!

Sounds like a great show, lots of fun!

I remember the air raid drills when I was in grade school in Glendale. Once a month we heard the sirens, trooped into the school’s hallways, dropped to our knees like Muslims at prayer and covered our heads. I’m not sure how many of us really understood why we did this, but we got out of class for a few minutes!

And all I ever had in Olney were fire drills, where we got to go outside for a few minutes — with the same out-of-class effect.
