Column: Pomona lands first restaurant by famed shrimp taco truck

A well-known food truck in L.A., Mariscos Jalisco, has just opened its first restaurant — and it’s in Pomona. Why? I interview owner Raul Ortega about his decision for Sunday’s column. Above, Ortega prepares a shrimp ceviche tostada.

Mariscos Jalisco sounds delicious! I’ll have to try it soon, unless it gets really long lines.

That tropical fish store has been there at least since I came to Cal Poly in 1971, maybe before that. And that little restaurant has been so many things over the years. I’m sure others will remember better than me, but I’m pretty sure it was a sandwich shop, maybe in the ’80s, and before that might have been a KFC or another chicken restaurant (or maybe an H. Salt Fish ‘n Chips?).

That’s amazing about the tropical fish store. I don’t know the history of the restaurant building, but for a few recent years it was New China Express, whose window signs advertised not only egg rolls but menudo!
