Column: In career cut short, Ritchie Valens still played twice in Pomona

It was 60 years ago today — Feb. 3, 1959 — that Ritchie Valens died in the plane crash that also killed Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper. I use the anniversary as the springboard to present my research into the two concerts Valens gave in — where else? — good ol’ Pomona. That fills a longer-than-usual Sunday column.

I saw “La Bamba”–probably the first time I ever saw Lou Diamond Phillips in a movie; also, a few years ago, we saw “John Mueller’s Winter Dance Party” at the Lewis Playhouse in Rancho which was our introduction to that venue–it is a wonderful venue. It was a fantastic concert–I wish it would come back to the Lewis again. The Big Bopper’s son was a member of John Mueller’s band.

Interesting. I didn’t know any of that.
