Column: SB DJ penned ‘Three Stars’ after ’59 plane crash

I follow up my column on “the day the music died” with a local angle. A hokey tribute song, “Three Stars,” that was hit a few weeks after the Feb. 3, 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper was written by a disc jockey in San Bernardino. There’s some Culture Corner items and a Vignette too, all in Sunday’s column.

Happy Birthday! It is a very young age in my opinion–I wish I were still so young. I haven’t done much time searching for places that offer senior discounts, in the recent years, because there is no question that I am old enough to qualify at every place that offers such. The senior breakfast menu at Carrows begins with age 55–they have a good senior power breakfast until 11:30 a.m. I don’t recall ever having to show proof of age when using senior discounts at a restaurant–(I order off the kids menu when I go to Nordstrom.) When it comes to movies and transportation you will probably need proof. I haven’t ventured farther than Laemmle for quite some time where movies are concerned–their senior age is 62. I vaguely recall that the other movie theaters in the surrounding area, when I used to attend, considered senior-age to be 55 and over. You will have to wait ten more years to ride the Metro and to attend the symphony and ballet in LA at a big discount (senior rush is the only way I can afford to go to those things any more.) Enjoy your life whatever your age–Richard Simmons told us at his seminar at the AARP convention, “Remember You Only Go Around Once”.

Thank you, Shirley! Frankly, 55 as a qualifying age for senior status and discounts seems about a decade premature, but if someone’s offering them for a service I want, I’m not too proud to take them up on it. At least I don’t think I am. I’m probably going to like the Metro and cultural discounts the best once I hit the proper age.

I seen a big group of senior folks exercising near the Montclair plaza enterance maybe you could join up, I don’t think they check ID’s.
