Remember the anti-warehouse art in The Cheech’s community gallery this spring? The “Burn Them All Down” artist has curated a show at San Bernardino’s Little Gallery on the same theme. I attend the opening and talk to the artists for Friday’s column.

Column: Preservation grant to aid Mitla Cafe in paint, repairs
The famed San Bernardino restaurant, in business since 1937, is one of 25 legacy restaurants around the nation to get a $40,000 grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation for exterior upgrades. I visit for my Sunday column.
Column: Psychic in SB didn’t foresee CCR’s success
In San Bernardino in 1969 for a Creedence Clearwater Revival concert, John Fogerty checked out a psychic whose shop was across the street from the band’s hotel. The prediction? 13 months of bad luck. Fogerty turned it into a song, “Tombstone Shadow,” that mentions “San Berdoo.” I write about that for my Wednesday column, timed to coincide with Fogerty’s concert Saturday at the LA County Fair.
Column: Sledgehammers, not shovels, at mall demolition ceremony
In San Bernardino, they held an unusual ceremony Monday in which city officials brandished sledgehammers to take a whack at the long-dead Carousel Mall to mark the start of demolition. It’s like progress in reverse. I attend and write about it for my Wednesday column.
Column: Friends, family pay tribute to Juan Pollo’s Albert Okura
Juan Pollo founder Albert Okura, who died Jan. 27, was remembered Saturday with a low-key memorial event at his San Bernardino flagship restaurant. I was there and write about him for my Sunday column.
Column: Couple buys long-empty landmark in downtown SB
A 1929 building with lots of ornate details has sat empty in downtown San Bernardino for 15 years. But it’s just changed hands to a motivated couple who are prepping the building for new uses. I take a look and chat with them for my Wednesday column.
Column: Tran keeps her cool in debut as mayor
Wednesday was the first regular council meeting for new San Bernardino Mayor Helen Tran. I was there. She did fine. And her daughter led the Pledge of Allegiance. Also, a speaker decried events of “a demonic nature.” Read more in my Friday column.
Column: Is ‘Don Quixote’ still relevant? SB councilman swears it is
I’ve intended to return to the subject of “Don Quixote,” in part to use some comments from a literature prof that came in after my deadline for the original column in November. And then last week brought a surprise. A San Bernardino councilmember who didn’t want to take the oath of office on a Bible borrowed my copy of “Don Quixote” to use instead. Yes, really. I write about that, as well as more prosaic reactions to the novel, in my Wednesday column.
Column: Jubilation in SB as Helen Tran sworn in as mayor
In San Bernardino, Helen Tran, the city’s first AAPI mayor, and only the third woman to hold the post, took the oath of office Wednesday while holding her 4-year-old son. I was there to witness the joy at the changing of the guard. I write about it for Friday’s column.
Column: Postage stamp to depict SB train station
An all-items column with news from San Bernardino, Redlands, Riverside, Pomona and Chino. The stars may never align so perfectly again, but it was neat to represent all four of our IE papers, and portions of three counties, in one column, i.e., Friday’s.
