Torrance police fired at the car of two fleeing robbers late Saturday, wounding at least one of them,  just after the speeding car hit an officer. police said.

The officer was taken to a nearby hospital. His condition was unknown, according to Torrance police Sgt. Bernard Anderson.

The suspect, who was later captured, did not receive life-threatening injuries. The suspect was also taken to the hospital, Anderson said.

The incident began at 8:23 p.m. when workers at  the Marshalls department store in the 19800 block of Hawthorne Boulevard noticed a pair of people in the store.

"They were being very active in the store,"  Anderson said early Sunday

Workers called police and when officers arrived, they saw the two leaving the store with store property.

Police detained one of the suspects, but the other ran to a waiting car. As the car sped off, the officer shot at it. That's when the car struck the officer, Anderson said.

The car sped down 182nd Street and stopped at Prairie Avenue, where it was abandoned.

Police set up a containment. They searched the area with ssistance from police from Hawthorne and Redondo Beach. A suspect was found nearby and arrested.

The third suspect was not located. She is described as a black, in her 20s, wearing a gray hooded sweat shirt  with a Nike logo. She had short hair and a pony tail, Anderson said.

The District Attorney's Office was informed of the officer-involved shooting in accordance with city policy. An investigation is ongoing.
