A man and woman were discovered fatally shot in a Manhattan Beach home today, in what investigators said could likely be a murder-suicide.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies are investigating the circumstances of the deaths of two unidentified people, found shot to death in the 300 block of Second Street around 11:30 a.m.

Manhattan Beach police officers discovered the bodies when they arrived at the home check on the welfare of a missing person reported out of Long Beach, said sheriff's Lt. Dan Rosenberg.

The man and woman, both white and in their early 20s, were found fatally shot in the rear bedroom of the home just blocks away from the ocean, he said.

A handgun was also recovered from the scene, Rosenberg said.

Authorities have not yet determined the circumstances of the deaths, but Rosenberg said that murder-suicide was more than likely and that "no killer was on the loose."

Police officers cordoned off a block in the tony residential neighborhood of Manhattan Beach bound by First and Second streets and Morningside Drive and Highland Avenue for much of the afternoon.

Several neighbors milled about, all saying that the neighborhood was generally quiet.
