Off-Duty LAPD cop exchanges gunfire with would-be robbers in Torrance, intersection of Carson and Cabrillo closed to traffic

| | Comments (0)
An exchange of gunfire erupted in Old Torrance about 2:30 a.m. Saturday when two men apparently attempted to rob an off-duty LAPD officer from the Wilshire Division, according to Torrance Police Chief Joh Neu, who said he was notified of the incident at home early this morning. The pair remain at large and a police chopper was seen circling the area this morning,

No one was hurt, but LAPD detectives have closed the intersection of Carson Street and Cabrillo Avenue, where the incident occurred, while they conduct an investigation. It's unclear how long the intersection will be closed to traffic; the LAPD officers on-scene are not authorized to talk to the media.

BTW, in an unrelated traffic snarl the traffic lights at Torrance and Hawthorne boulevards are out (again) and crews from Southern California Edison are working to fix the problem. Traffic in the area is a mess, so motorists should avoid the area, police said.

Updated 1:30 p.m.
Torrance Police said LAPD have concluded their investigation and the intersection Cabrillo Avenue and Carson Street is now open to traffic.

Lunada Bay closed due to sewage spill

An estimated 100,000 gallons of sewage entered an intersection in Palos Verdes Estates, shutting down access to Lunada Bay, public health officials said late Monday.

Closure signs have been posted at entry points to the popular coastal spot, and the closure is expected to remain in effect for 72 hours, according to a press release from the county Department of Public Health.

A collapsed sewage pipe near the intersection of Via Rivera and Paseo Lunado apparently caused the spill, which sent effluent into the ocean.

The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County had stopped the flow and were cleaning up the site, health officials said in the release, adding that the department was notified of the spill at about 3 p.m. (Neither the districts nor the department notified the Breeze; I heard because a nice resident forwarded an email that Police Chief Dan Dreiling had sent to Neighborhood Watch members.)

The closure will be lifted when health officials determine that bacterial levels have returned to normal.

UPDATE: PVDS / 25th Street reopened

| | Comments (0)

UPDATE: At about 1:15 p.m., Rancho Palos Verdes announced on its listserv that traffic was again flowing in both directions. Crews from L.A. will be working and may shut the road down periodically. A closure could occur again today or tonight if more heavy rain comes our way, as forecasted.

The city of Rancho Palos Verdes announced this morning that PV Drive South -- which turns into 25th Street in San Pedro -- is still closed due to debris and mud flow.

Last night, we reported that a nearby hillside has collapsed because of the rain.

As locals know, that area floods in heavy downpours because of inadequate drainage for the water and mud coming off Tarapaca Canyon. There was an amazing letter to the editor this week in which an elderly woman described being saved from her stalled car as flood waters rose during the rains last month.

From the city:

Eastbound PVDS is closed to traffic beginning at La Rotonda Drive. Westbound 25th Street is likely closed Anchovy in the City of Los Angeles (San Pedro). With more heavy rain forecasted, it is expected that the roadway will be completely closed for the next 24 hours or so. We will provide additional breaking news updates as additional information is available.
