It's a really windy Mother's Day

Readers, you should see some serious wind in the South Bay this Mother's Day. Here's the latest on the weather, from City News Service.

LOS ANGELES - Gale warnings have been posted for Santa Monica Bay and the Catalina Channel, and high winds today may cause dangerous conditions on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu and Pacific Palisades, the National Weather Service warned.

A wind advisory was issued at 11 a.m. for L.A. County beaches, where winds were expected to increase this afternoon to 20-30 miles an hour, with gusts to 40 mph common.

Such an advisory may be rare for the beaches, but were posted again for today in for the mountains along the Golden State (5) Freeway corridor near the Grapevine and across the Antelope Valley.

In the waters immediately off the Los Angeles and Orange counties coasts, forecasters issued a gale warning to take effect at 3 p.m. for sustained winds at the 30-35 mph range, with gusts near 40 mph common.

The NWS predicted the strongest winds will occur along the foothills of the Antelope Valley this afternoon, tonight and early Monday. Areas of blowing dust and sand could locally reduce visibility to one-quarter mile or less at a time.

Motorists driving to Las Vegas, Palm Springs or Arizona could expect winds strong enough to generate dust or sandstorms, the NWS said.
