Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Ramon Cortines issued a statement this morning saying he ordered the cancellation of a request for parent funds to pay for buses to sports events.
I reported on this new $24 per-student request -- meant to help plug a hole in the athletics budget -- in today's paper. If the goal of raising $650,000 was not met, LAUSD officials said games could have been canceled.
Cortines said he'd find other sources for the money. His statement is below, and I'll have more on this later today.

"After further review of the voluntary $24 per student transportation donation for high school sporting events this year, I have ordered this decision for a request for this voluntary fee be rescinded and have asked staff to go back and review other alternatives.
"Although this district is in a financial crisis, I am asking for other financial options to cover the $650,000 needed for the district's athletics transportation budget."
