10 Facts To Know About Nutrition

  1. Back to the basics. If you want to learn anything about nutrition, a definition can go a long way. Nutrition is the act or process of how a person processes and utilizes food substances, such as nutrients. Nutrients provide proper nourishment. Keep your diet simple; choose whole fruits and vegetables instead of processed ones to gain all the nourishment you can.
  2. Get smart and follow your intuition. Whether you are trying to lose weight or simply want to maintain your health, following a simple nutrition plan is all you need, Revak said. When you grab an afternoon snack, which do you think has more nutrients? An orange or a cookie? It's that simple.
  3. Record what you eat. Many people have busy schedules, eat on the go, and do not keep track of what they eat. Keeping a record of your daily intake of food will help you make smart food decisions. When you are conscious of what you eat, you'll realize whether there is a nutrition deficiency in your diet and you can tackle it early on.
  4. Nutrition in Water. Really? Believe it or not, there are nutritional benefits to drinking water; and the more water you drink, the more you benefit. According to health experts, water is considered an essential nutrient because it has to be consumed from outside sources to satisfy the metabolism. In addition, water is a catalyst for enzymatic reactions involved in nutrient digestion, absorption, transport and metabolism.
  5. An apple a day could really keep the doctor away. It is a familiar saying, but apples really do offer many necessary nutrients such as calcium, iron, potassium and Vitamins A and C. Apples, which come in varieties, are simple to transport and easy to eat - no utensils necessary.
  6. Read the labels. The next time you take a trip to the grocery store, be sure to look at the "nutrition facts" on the back labels of the food packages. Some food items may advertise that they are a "good source" of certain vitamins, but this could very well be an advertising tactic. Know for yourself by looking at the facts.
  7. Yes! Chocolate really does have nutritional benefits. If you have a sweet tooth, know that dark chocolate could be an option for dessert. The cocoa in dark chocolate contains nutrients called flavanols, which have been associated with decreasing risks of cardiovascular disease and improving women's skin.
  8. Learn about nutritional supplements. It can be difficult to get the recommended amount of nutrients in every meal. Therefore, nutritional supplements have been a practical way for many people to properly measure the right amount of vitamins they should be consuming each and every day.
  9. Share your knowledge about nutrition. As you begin to implement better eating and more nutritional intake, get your friends and family involved, too. A healthy family equals a happy family.
  10. Consult with an expert. Contact your local nutritionist to find out what nutritional needs are important to your body.
