First bites: Mill Creek Cattle Co.

Let me start by saying I'm not a huge BBQ person. I don't eat a lot of red meat in general.

However, I will likely be returning to the Mill Creek Cattle Co. in Redlands.

After a suggestion from a reader, reading about it in the Redlands Daily Facts, and hearing the owners talk about it on Allan Borgen's radio show, Bren and I were just too curious not to give Mill Creek a try.

So on a recent Monday, we went.

It's a pleasant enough place -- a brand-new building -- with lots of western-style decor.

We stepped up to the register and ordered. I opted for the "Real Deal" turkey sandwich with sweet potato fries and a soda. Bren ordered the Triple Threat Treat BBQ platter.

We sat down and almost immediately, our food was brought to the table.
My sandwich was ginormous! There was no way I would be able to take a bite of the whole thing.

So I took a bite off the side and was a little disappointed that the thick turkey slices were cold. I don't know what gave me the impression that the turkey would be hot...that's just what I had envisioned.

Cold turkey or not, it was a very good sandwich, loaded with bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato, mayo and melted swiss cheese. The menu indicated it would be served on homemade toast, but it was on a bun instead. A delicious, soft, flavorful bun. Mmmmm!

The sandwich was good, but probably what will keep me coming  back is the sweet potato fries.

Quite simply, they were the best sweet potato fries I've ever had. About the same size as your typical french fries, but half as thick, they were crispy and coated with a dusting of sugar and a slight hint of salt. Wow!

The sandwich was a reasonable deal, too at $5.50. The soda and side combo added $2.50 to the package.

For those of you, like me, who are not big BBQ fans, Mill Creek offers enough variety that you will likely find something to try: chicken fingers, chili cheese fries, a muffaletta or a salad. They also serve breakfast.

And if you do like BBQ, they've got everything from spicy links to pulled pork to Tri-Tip to ribs.

Mill Creek Cattle Co. is at 2087 Orange Tree Lane in Redlands, just across California Street from the defunct Pharaoh's Lost Kingdom. They're open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily offering take-out, dine-in and drive-through.

If you've been to their sit-down restaurant in Mentone, you know what you're in for. If you haven't, give their new restaurant a try. The food is fresh and flavorful. And don't forget to order the sweet potato fries...you'll be hooked for life!

Mark your calendars: According to their Web site, Mill Creek is having a grand opening VIP party from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, February 7 in the Sit-n-Sleep parking lot with complementary (freeeeeeee!) BBQ samples and Monster energy drink.
