Mexican food choices in San Bernardino
One of the things I've wanted to do with Dine 909 is to open up the discussion of what everyone's favorite places to eat are.
Having lived in San Bernardino most of my life, and having been to many, many local restaurants in that long expanse of time, I figured that would be a good place to start.
And since San Bernardino seems to have an over abundance of Mexican places, let's start with an obvious (and perhaps contentious) choice.
What is my favorite San Bernardino Mexican restaurant? That depends on what I'm in the mood for. I actually have several, and I've divided them up into categories:
Fast food -- Alberto's Mexican Food, 1033 W. Highland Ave.
Alberto's Mexican Food restaurants seem to be everywhere, and there are several within the city limits. I've grown particularly fond of the one on Highland Avenue, about halfway between I-215 and SR-259 (you know, that road you take to get from the northbound 215 to the eastbound 210).
Actually, I think their food was a little better when they were in the building on the south side of the street, but it still beats other fast food places.
I'm especially fond of their chips with guacamole (freshly fried tortilla chips smothered in guacamole and cheese) and their cheese quesadillas (huge, and loaded with cheese). Their burritos are decently-sized, and are tasty, as well. They've also got some pretty tasty enchilada plates. Yum!
This particular Alberto's is in a new building, with a nice salsa bar that also has those hot pickled jalapeƱos/carrots/onions that I love so much.
The only complaint I have with them is that their prices seem to go up every time I stop in. They've gone from dirt cheap to average.
Runners-up
Amapola Rico Taco (1279 W. Base Line, 596 N Mount Vernon Ave., 2390 Del Rosa Ave., 7990 Tippecanoe Ave., 1060 Harriman Place) -- Friends swear by Amapola's. I'm still unconvinced. Perhaps it's just that I haven't tried the right thing there. Of course, I haven't yet tried the sincronizada. That could be the one thing that could sway me.
Rosa Maria's (4202 N. Sierra Way) Rosa Maria's "Garbage" burritos are legendary.
Gone, but not forgotten
Hot Salsa (707 W. Second Street)
