Devilishly simple snack haunts newspaper

It’s baaaack!

It seems to materialize around the time of the autumnal equinox and linger until Halloween.

For the past several years, features editor (and future Inland Emperor?) John Weeks has been bringing in a snack that is simple and frightfully, addictively delicious.

“What is this snack?” you might ask.

Well, here’s the recipe:

Salted peanuts
Candy corn

That’s it. Simple, huh?

You take roughly equal amounts of each and mix them together.

Of course, you can throw caution to the wind by substituting candy pumpkins for some/all of the candy corn, but you’re really just changing the shape, not the taste.

“And what does it taste like?” you might ask.

It tastes amazingly like a PayDay bar. Weird, huh?

John explains that he got the recipe from the book “Weird Snacks” compiled by now-retired Palm Beach Post columnist Ron Wiggins. (Oooh…another newspaper connection!)

John likes the concoction because it satisfies those “salty-sweet-waxy” cravings.

He also points out that since peanuts are high in protein, the snack is probably good for you.

Not too sure about that last part, but I do know that it’ll be a miracle if I don’t gain 10 pounds by the time it vanishes from the newsroom again.
