Here, there and everywhere

Here are just a few random Inland Empire food-related tidbits that have landed in the Dine 909 inbox recently:

  • Caf y pan y ms

San Bernardino gets fresh & easy

Sorry, Loma Linda.

Tough luck, Rialto.

We know you have been waiting a very long time for your fresh & easy stores to open. You have our sympathy.

However, I’m glad since the San Bernardino fresh & easy opened Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. Whoo-hoo!

Tucked away in the back corner of a strip mall at the southeast corner of Highland and Del Rosa avenues, the new grocery store grew out of a space that used to be a Chinese restaurant, among other things.

And judging from the extraordinarily long line of customers waiting for
the grand opening, I wasn’t the only one eagerly looking forward to
fresh & easy coming to town.

So long, Tacone and China Palace

From reader Scott in R.C. comes the news that Victoria Gardens has lost another eatery: Tacone Flavor Grill.

I never figured out how to pronounce that. Is it pronounced tah-cone-ee or tah-cone? Either way, it’s no longer there.

It’s still listed on Tacone’s Web site, but gone from Victoria Gardens’.

There may or may not still be a Tacone near the Lake Elsinore outlet mall (17600 Collier Ave., #147-A) for those who have a craving and are willing to drive. It’s listed on Tacone’s Web site, but….

Get the door, it’s Domino’s the Los Angeles County Fire Department!

We should all know by now that when the time changes from daylight saving time back to standard time (as it will this year on November 1) — and vice versa, that should be a reminder to check the batteries in your fire alarms.

On Tuesday, October 20, Domino’s Pizza
and the Los Angeles County Fire Department in the city of Claremont are teaming up to help remind you to test your fire alarms.

On that day, if you order a pizza between 6:30 to 8 p.m. from the Domino’s store at 366 W. Foothill
Blvd., in Claremont, don’t be surprised if your pizza arrives accompanied by firefighters aboard a fire
engine.

Get your sizzle on at Gyu-Kaku

Gyu-Kaku, the Japanese barbecue restaurant where you cook your own food at your table, is again featuring an all-night happy hour, starting at 8:30pm to last call!

That means 99-cent draft beer, 50% off all appetizers, and $2.95 BBQ items. A minimum purchase of $10 is required, but with Harami Miso and Kalbi Garlic tantalizing your tastebuds, I think you’ll find that more than easy enough to meet. More details can be found in their monthly specials.

Note: The Kalbi Garlic is very, very good.

Gyu-Kaku is conveniently located in Victoria Gardens on 7893 Monet Ave. in Rancho Cucamonga.

Devilishly simple snack haunts newspaper

It’s baaaack!

It seems to materialize around the time of the autumnal equinox and linger until Halloween.

For the past several years, features editor (and future Inland Emperor?) John Weeks has been bringing in a snack that is simple and frightfully, addictively delicious.

“What is this snack?” you might ask.

Well, here’s the recipe:

Certainly fresh, mostly easy

They came by the dozens. Young and old.

Simultaneously clutching coupons and holding tightly onto their carts, they anxiously awaited for 10 a.m., when the store would officially open and they’d be able to shop — at the newest fresh & easy, in Rancho Cucamonga.

That was the scene Wednesday morning as fresh & easy finally opened up a new Inland Empire store. A pair of new stores, in fact, as a second new store in Riverside (4080 Madison St., at Arlington Avenue) also opened Wednesday.
