Smiles Sweet Shop Grand Opening Marks a New Beginning for Fontana Resident
FONTANA—Smiles Sweet Shop, an independent dessert café, celebrates its Grand Opening with a ribbon cutting by the Fontana Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, July 21, and live music on Friday and Saturday, July 22-23.
The opening of Smiles Sweet Shop is meaningful to John-Mark Algallar, the dessert café’s owner and baker. For years he felt the pull to leave his stable government job and work toward his dream—a business of his own. During this time, he began experimenting with baking and developed his own recipe for mini cheesecakes. These desserts—now known as Winks—received such positive responses that they became the centerpiece of Smiles Sweet Shop.
Algallar chose to open his shop locally not only to be closer to his family and cut his commute time, but also to foster connections with his community in a way that his former job in Los Angeles did not allow. “I love my city. I love where I live. I want to finally be a part of it,” Algallar said. The shop’s “Hall of Smiles” reflects this desire for the shop to be a fixture in the community: a free Cheesecake Wink is offered to each guest who brings in a smile—in the form of a photograph—to post in the hall.
Smiles Sweet Shop offers Cheesecake Winks and other handcrafted desserts along with specialty bottled sodas and Hawaiian coffee. New to the shop’s menu are its mini pies, which will be debuted at the Grand Opening. Guests of the Grand Opening will be asked to help name the pies in a special contest.
