State chili cookoff and Inland Empire menudo championship are tomorrow in San Bernardino

Thanks to a co-worker for alerting me the fact that the International Chili Society’s 39th annual California State Chili Championship and the 9th annual Inland Empire Menudo Championship are happening from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. tomorrow (May 5) at Perris Hill Park, 1001 E. Highland Ave., in San Bernardino.

A menudo championship on Cinco de Mayo? How convenient!

This marks the return of the cook-offs to the park, after being held at the National Orange Show Events Center the last two years.

Admission is free.

Cooking contests include chili, chili verde, salsa, menudo, People’s Choice chili, best restaurant chili and open salsa. Other food-related contests include a chili eating contest, showmanship and best booth.

The event will also feature entertainment, including an all-age karaoke contest, Ms. Chili Pepper and Mr. Hot Sauce contests, the “World Famous” Shoot and Holler, live music by the Good Times Band and western stuntman shows by the Santa Fe Drifters.

Proceeds from the event go the Friends of San Bernardino Parks Inc.

A warning: If you are planning to attend this event and are coming from parts south, be aware that the northbound 215 Freeway will basically be closed all weekend. Your best bet is to go exit Waterman Avenue from the 10 Freeway, head north to Highland Avenue, and turn right. For more info, click here.
