Ph Century’s challenge finally beaten

61400-CenturyPhoDown-thumb-250x166-61399.png

Upland’s Ph Century has had a longstanding challenge — eat a six-pound bowl of ph, consisting of a pound of meat, two pounds of noodles and three pounds of broth in 30 minutes or less.

That was, until last Thursday.

Century’s six-pound ph bowl challenge was beaten, nay annihilated, by the Inland Empire’s one and only Naader “Freak8er” Reda.

The High Desert resident, you may recall, took second place in the professional eaters category in last week’s Farrell’s Ice Cream Eating Challenge.

For beating the challenge (in an amazing 17 minutes), Naader received $5 in gift certificates per the previous failed challengers (23, for a total of $115), an “I ph’d it up!” T-shirt and his meal for free.

The owners were so amazed by the feat, that they gave him a souvenir bowl and a free boba tea as well.

The victory is documented on Century’s Facebook page.

And so the challenge begins again.

If you think you can beat Century’s challenge, head to the restaurant, 1244 W. Foothill Blvd.

And make sure to bring your $5 to add to the pot.

Matano’s Little Italy closing for summer break

If you haven’t yet checked out our favorite sandwich shop, Matano’s Little Italy, you better hurry!

The deli is closing July 28 and will reopen more than a month later, on September 4.

Maria and company are taking a well-deserved summer vacation.

However, we will miss her delicious sandwiches, lasagna rolls, tiramisu and other delicacies.

If there was ever a reason to brave the insane Yucaipa Boulevard roundabouts, Matano’s is it.

We (and those who have given Matano’s a five-star rating on Yelp) will have to find somewhere else to lunch during the month of August.

Matano’s Little Italy, 12114 California Blvd., Yucaipa, is normally open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Riverside Red Robin to open soon

Red Robin’s latest contribution to the culinary world is the introduction of two new Tavern Style burgers which use the ghost pepper, once the hottest pepper known to man: The Fiery Ghost and the Cry Baby.

The new restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Well, it’s been a couple of weeks since we’ve had a food truck festival…who’s hungry?

This Saturday (July 21) is the latest food truck fest curated by PBS television host Cliff Young.

The Mt. SAC Food Truck Festival will take place from noon to 6 p.m. in parking lot D of Mt. San Antonio College, unsurprisingly.

If you’ve attended any of Cliff’s prior events, you know it’s going to be a first-class affair.

Cliff’s got 32 trucks scheduled for the event, including, from the Inland Empire, the Cupcake Place and our pals from Where’s the Fire? Gourmet Pizza and Suite 106 Cupcakery.

We’re most looking forward to sampling from several new trucks we’ve never heard of, including B & R Burgers, discussion truck, Pies and Fries, Pig’s Feet Under and Pulp Fusion.

Re:Fresh Pomona DJs Mike Styles and Subira will provide the beats to accompany the eats.

General admission ickets are $10 (plus $1.24 service fee) in advance or at the door (no service fee). A V.I.P. admission ticket ($25, plus $1.62 service fee) grants you early admission at 11 a.m., plus seating in an exclusive Smart & Final-hosted tent which will be stocked with free water, soda and snacks.

In addition, a family ‘n friends four-pack of general admission tickets is available for $30 (plus $1.74 service fee). That comes out to only $7.50 per ticket!

Proceeds will benefit the Mt. SAC Foundation Scholarship Fund.
