Pechanga BBQ Championship is Saturday

Pechanga BBQ ChapionshipAnother great Inland Empire food event landed in our inbox this morning: Pechanga’s second annual BBQ Championship is Saturday (June 22).

Dozens of ‘cuing teams from Washington, Utah, Arizona and all over California will be competing in the event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

They’ll be hoping to take home their share of the $20,000 prize in this Kansas City Barbeque Society event, the largest in Southern California.

Admission is just $5, and kids 10 and younger are admitted free. Barbecue tastings and beverages are extra.

Qdoba Mexican Grill to close nearly 20 percent of company-operated locations

Jack in the Box-owned Qdoba Mexican Grill will close 67 of its 340 company-operated locations by the end of September, the company announced this week.

The closures don’t affect any of the company’s 307 franchise locations.

However, the company plans to offset the closures with 70 to 75 new locations, including about 40 which will be company-operated.

A list of locations has not been released.

Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday…hello Shiki Sushi!

Shiki SushiThe former Ruby Tuesday location on San Bernardino’s Hospitality Lane has been vacant for about three and a half years.

That’s finally changing as construction is actively going on in the building at 996 E. Hospitality Lane.

Shiki Sushi, currently at the end of a strip mall (1760 S. Tippecanoe Ave.) just east of the old Ruby Tuesday’s, will be moving to the larger, standalone location.

No time frame is given for the move.

Cheers to learning at Fairplex on Saturday

Foodies won’t want to miss Saturday’s (June 22) Cheers event at Fairplex in Pomona.

Billed as “L.A.’s wine, spirits, beer and food festival,” the event showcases the award-winning wines, spirits, beers and olive oils of the Los Angeles International Competitions.

More importantly, it’s a fundraiser for educational programs at the Learning Centers at Fairplex, which offers educational programs for students of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Hot Dog on a Stick celebrates its founder on his birthday

HotDog on a StickOn this day (June 13) in 1913, Dave Barham was born.

And who is Dave Barham, you might ask?

In 1946, he started Hot Dog on a Stick near the Santa Monica Pier.

From 4 to 8 p.m. today, the company is celebrating what would have been Dave’s 100th birthday with $1 hot dogs (and veggie dogs) on a stick today. (One per customer, please!)

Food trucks at Saturday’s Mach One Mud Run in Corona

It’s time once again for the Mach One Mud Run in Corona!

And, as last year, there will be food trucks, along with beer from Hangar 24 Craft Brewery.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday (June 15) at the Corona Municipal Airport, 1900 Aviation Drive, Corona.

Admission for spectators is free, and parking is just $5.

Tickets available for Packinghouse Brewing Company’s BrewGrass Festival

BrewGrassIt seems like Southern California brewers are getting together at every opportunity.

Really, we’re OK with that.

The next gathering will take place at Riverside’s Packinghouse Brewing Company’s BrewGrass Festival on June 29.

The event will take place from 1 to 6 p.m. at the brewery, 6421 Central Ave., Riverside.

In addition to unlimited two-ounce sample pours from lots of Southern California breweries, the event will feature food trucks and live bluegrass music from The Salty Suites, The Tail Draggers, Shadow Mountain Band and The Original Bladerunners.
