Del Tacos testing new ‘platos’ at select Inland Empire locations

Del Taco recently introduced its new platos at select locations in San Bernardino, Redlands, Colton, Loma Linda and Riverside.

The platos come with a choice of either a wet burrito, two fish tacos or two street tacos, plus cilantro lime rice, beans and chips and salsa.

Prices range from $6.49 to $7.49.

It appears to be a second go-round for Del Taco’s platos. They were also tested about a year ago in the Sacramento area.

If you’re interested in trying them for yourself, head to one of these locations:

  • Colton: 834 W. Valley Blvd.; 1010 E. Washington St.
  • Loma Linda: 24898 Redlands Blvd.
  • Redlands: 1624 W. Redlands Blvd.; 602 E. Redlands Blvd.
  • Riverside: 3487 Arlington Ave.; 4407 Brockton Ave; 6333 Riverside Ave.; 1255 University Ave.; 3199 Van Buren Blvd.
  • San Bernardino: 272 E. 40th St.; 2665 S. Waterman Ave.

Fast 5 Pizza expands into Colton

The small, Inland Empire-based discount pizza chain Fast 5 Pizza has opened its fourth location.

The new location is at 1141 N. Mount Vernon Ave., in Colton’s Plaza Las Glorias.

Today (November 9) is the final day of their grand opening specials, which include a pepperoni pizza for only $3.99 (plus tax, natch) and a family pack, which includes either a cheese or pepperoni pizza, eight wings and a side of ranch, and a two-liter soda for only $10.99 (plus tax).

I stopped by and picked up a pepperoni pizza last night, and was pleasantly surprised. I might even pick up another on the way home tonight and save myself a buck.

The Colton location joins locations in Rialto, San Bernardino and Fontana.

The chain is also planning to open in Riverside and La Habra.

Still no word on if Vin Diesel does deliveries for them.

Out with the old, in with the new in Colton

The rather unassuming corner of Ninth Street and Valley Boulevard in Colton is soon to be home to not one, but two new restaurants.

One of them, Red Hot Caf, is already open. (Thanks to reader Steve for the tip!)

Red Hot replaces the been-there-since-the-dawn-of-time Rickshaw Boy at 182 E. Valley Blvd., which has been closed for about a year.

An LED sign advertised hot wings and hot links.

Catty-corner from Red Hot will soon be the third Food Connection location.

Food Connection is moving in where the short-lived Bob’s Big Boy was, at 201 E. Valley Blvd.

Bob’s closed “for remodeling” back in May of this year and ended up being remodeled into a completely different restaurant.

The new Food Connection will join their current locations in Grand Terrace and Riverside.

I see this as a step in the right direction. I’ve enjoyed dozens of meals at both Food Connection restaurants, but had nothing but lackluster meals at that particular Bob’s.

Openings here and there

It’s time to catch up on a handful of new restaurants I’ve noticed while tooling around the Inland Empire…

Late last year, a little bit of Norco moved into Colton as Norco’s Famous Sixth Street Deli and Grill took spot occupied briefly by Submarina at 1231 E. Washington St., Suite C.

I haven’t been to either the Norco or the Colton location yet, but according to their Web site, the May special is a chicken fried steak or chicken fried chicken sandwich, chips and a small fountain drink for $5.99.

That’s either a lot late or a little early.

Also, another branch of Corky’s Kitchen and Bakery opened up recently at 2019 N. Riverside Ave., Suite 11, in Rialto, just north of the 210 freeway.

I’ve noticed the Rancho Cucamonga Corky’s while driving on the 210 and have been wanting to try it, but I didn’t realize the most important part…Corky’s is open 24 hours a day!

I’m always on the lookout for decent late night food, and Corky’s is pretty well-reviewed on Yelp. I’m looking forward to giving the Rialto restaurant a try.

Adiós, Colton Zendejas!

As you may have read in today’s Biz page, Zendejas’ Colton location has closed.

The restaurant had recently remodeled to expand its bar and add a second dance floor, which ran afoul of the restaurant’s conditional-use permit with the city.

Colton Police ordered the establishment to cease its nightclub activities as of August 1, and the owner decided to shut down.

In other words, the restaurant couldn’t survive solely as a restaurant.

Prospective diners were greeted by a hand-written note saying: “Thank you for your support.  We have relocated to 1970 Ostrems Way in San Bernardino.”

Odd choice of wording, since that San Bernardino location has been open for years.

Personally, I can’t remember the last time I ate at the Colton location. Or the San Bernardino location, which is only about a block from The Sun.

You can read Matt Wrye’s full story here.

Zendejas’ closing makes the third restaurant in that neighborhood that I’ve noticed has gone belly-up.
