Wienerschnitzel grand opening in Victorville tomorrow

Calling all High Desert hot dog aficionados!

The Wienerschnitzel at 12951 Hesperia Road in Victorville will be celebrating its grand opening from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow (August 20).

They’ll be offering buy-one-get-one-free chili dogs during the grand opening.

They’ll also have a ribbon cutting ceremony, a hot dog eating contest (winner gets free chili dogs for a year and an iPod), raffles and a prize wheel, a bounce house, a DJ and free cake!

Five Guys targets the High Desert

I happened to do a check of Five Guys Burgers and Fries’ locations map earlier this week and discovered something.

In addition to previously-known planned locations in San Bernardino, Moreno Valley, Mira Loma and Corona, they’ve also listed two future restaurants in the High Desert.

One is in Victorville, at 15655 Roy Rogers Drive. The other is in Hesperia, at 12795 Main St.

Both are set to be open 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.

Both are right off the 15 Freeway.

No word on a time frame for when they will open. Five Guys typically waits until restaurants’ opening days before announcing them via Twitter and Facebook.

Today’s Tommy Tuesday is in Barstow

Heading to or from Vegas today?

Or do you live in the High Desert?

Then you’ll want to stop by the Original Tommy’s in Barstow, because today’s Tommy Tuesday is taking place there.

That’s right. You can stop and pick up a chiliburger (or three) for only 65 each today.

All you have to do is utter the secret word: Family.

You can buy up to five chiliburgers at that special, 65th Anniversary price, until 10 p.m. today (February 22) only.

I know a certain nurse who might want to leave for work early and pick up some chiliburgers on his way to the Barstow Community Hospital E.R.

The Barstow Original Tommy’s is at 2610 Fisher Blvd.

The promotion is being shared with the Las Vegas Original Tommy’s at 5208 Boulder Highway.

Golden Corral is open

I’m hearing word that the Inland Empire’s only Golden Corral opened a while back and that the lines are still out the door.

The new location is at 12845 Main St. in Hesperia, in the Super Target center.

This is Golden Corral’s second foray into the I.E. since their restaurants in Riverside, Temecula and, apparently Hesperia as well, closed up decades ago.

Have you been to the new Hesperia location? Feel free to comment below.

Feelin’ like a hot dog? Then head to Phelan!

Wienerschnitzel will celebrate the grand opening of its first location in Phelan with a ribbon cutting ceremony from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today (September 11) as part of Phelan Phamily Phun Day.

The new restaurant is at 4145 Phelan Road (at Sheep Creek Road) and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The celebration will include free activities and games for guests, including a hot dog eating contest, where the winner will receive an Apple iPod Shuffle and Wienerschnitzel chili dogs for a year.

They’ll also have a free raffle with a bicycle and Apple iPod Shuffle as prizes, as well as a special appearance by “America’s Most Wanted Hot Dog” – The Delicious One.

The event will also feature a bounce house and a spin-the-prize-wheel with free t-shirts, antenna toppers and free chili dog and Tastee-Freez soft-serve ice cream cone coupons. Vic Slick From KOLA 99.9 FM will do a live radio broadcast 10 a.m. to noon.

Hmmm…I’m getting a feeling of dj vu.

Golden Corral to open in the High Desert

High Desert Dine 909ers, be prepared to loosen your belt a notch!

Buffet restaurant Golden Corral, which at one time had locations in Riverside and Temecula, is making another foray into the Inland Empire with a new location in Hesperia.

The new restaurant will be at 12845 Main Street, just west of the 15 and next to the Super Target.

Golden Corral will have some pretty tough competition with the excellent Wood Grill Buffet just down the street, but from what I’ve heard, Golden Corral is pretty good, too.

The restaurant is scheduled to open in early September.

Killer cookie dough update

Good news — sort of — for those of us worried about the potentially-Salmonella-tainted-peanut butter cookie dough.

The number of schools which received and sold the potentially dangerous dough is down from 13 to three, but the lone San Bernardino County school is among them.

The three schools:

  • Barstow Intermediate School, Barstow
  • Fremont Elementary, Alhambra
  • 93rd Street Elementary, Los Angeles

So, if you happened to have purchased some Sweet Success Frozen Peanut Butter Cookie Dough recently from someone who goes to school at Barstow Intermediate School, you are asked to dispose of it.

French toast smoothie or horchata shake? You decide!

Making my way back from Las Vegas last night, I suggested we stop at Sonic in Victorville — since it’s a rarity here in Southern California — and grab a snack.

To my delight, I saw they had a Sticky Bun Dough Blast. Of course, I was curious to know if it was good or not, so I asked the lone carhop, the very helpful K3vin. He said it was pretty good, so I decided it was worth a shot.

I’m very glad I did.

Sonic’s “Blasts” are their equivalent of a McFlurry/Blizzard/etc. — ice cream with candy or other sweet treats blended in. The Sticky Bun Dough Blast has bits of sticky bun dough — sweetly cinnamony with a hint of maple syrup flavor — and praline pecans blended throughout and sprinkled on top, with a dollop of whipped cream. What a delicious treat!

Of course, at 578 calories for a regular size, it’s not something you want to have every day, but as a very occasional treat I’d have to say it was worth the extra calories.

I just couldn’t decide if it tasted more like French toast or horchata. You’ll have to try one for yourself and let us know. Don’t wait too long…the Sticky Bun Dough Blast is only available for a limited time.
