Waffle-sandwich innovator coming to Chino Hills

Orange County-based Bruxië has announced that its first location outside of Orange County will be in the Inland Empire — Chino Hills to be exact.

Bruxië specializes in gourmet waffle sandwiches filled with everything from bacon, egg and cheddar to pastrami to burgers to peanut butter and jelly.

The sandwiches are made using a yeasty, not-sweet waffle, but the restaurant also offers the more traditional Liège waffles made with pearl sugar for dessert.

Bruxi also offers salads and desserts made with frozen custard, along with daily specials.

Prices appear reasonable, with nothing on the menu over $10.

The new location will be at 13920 City Center Drive in the Shoppes at Chino Hills, a spot formerly occupied by Johnny Rockets.

(Note to self: Johnny Rockets is down to two Inland Empire locations — Victoria Gardens and Rancho Mirage.)

The Chino Hills location isn’t expected to open until November.

Guests who donate $1 to the No Kid Hungry campaign will receive a coupon good for a free Whoopie pie during a return visit, and those who donate $5 will receive a booklet of offers worth $45.

Plus, each guest who donates will be recognized with a card bearing their name that’ll be displayed on the walls of the cafe.

Corner Bakery Cafe has participated in the campaign each year since its inception, and has contributed $610,000.

Help support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital during Nicky’s Week at RA Sushi

RA Sushi, with Inland Empire locations in Chino Hills and Corona, is hosting its eighth annual “Nicky’s Week” fundraiser through Saturday (June 2).

RA will donate 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale of a variety of
menu items and beverages to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to help support the hospital’s mission.

Known primarily as a cancer research center, St. Jude doctors and researchers also treat children with sickle cell disease and pediatric HIV.

Nicky’s Week is held in memory of 13-year-old St. Jude patient Nicholas “Nicky” Mailliard, of Scottsdale, Ariz., who lost a long battle with brain cancer in February 2005. A nephew of one of RA Sushi’s founders, Nicky held a special place in the hearts of RA Sushi associates throughout the organization.

RA Sushi initiated the fundraiser to honor the memory of Nicky and to raise awareness and funds for St. Jude, where no child is ever turned away because of a family’s inability to pay for medical treatments. They’ve raised $943,000 so far and hope to surpass $1 million this week.

In addition, the chain is hosting a Twitter contest to help spread the word about the fundraiser. Grand prize is free sushi for a year. Click here for more information on the contest.

All 25 RA Sushi locations in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia,
Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Nevada and Texas will participate in the
fundraiser.

For more information on Nicky’s Week, click here.

RA Sushi is at 13925 City Center Drive, Suite 2065, Chino Hills, and 2785 Cabot Drive, Suite 7-101, Corona.

Dripp’s Valentine’s gift to you: A new drink, plus a chance to win big

While we were at Dripp a couple of weeks back for a Turkish coffee tasting (more on that later), we were privy to news of a new hot beverage that the coffee/dessert bar was introducing for Valentine’s Day: The White Knight.

The White Knight was inspired by a premium chocolate (or more specifically, ChocoLate) bar,  white chocolate with lemon and pink peppercorn, that is sold at Dripp.

The White Knight is a white chocolate macchiato made by melting pieces of the chocolate with hot espresso, then spiced up with pink peppercorns and brightened with freshly-grated lemon zest.

The new drink will be available today (February 14) after 7 p.m. at an introductory Valentine’s Day only price of two for $14.

To further entice you to stop by Dripp on your way to (or from) a romantic dinner, every couple that orders two White Knights will be entered into a drawing for a fantastic coffee package valued at over $200:

  • Two Hario V60 Drippers
  • Two 12 oz Bags of Intelligentsia’s Black Cat or Dripp’s Espresso Republic
  • One Buono Kettle
  • Two Kone Filters

If you miss your opportunity to try the White Knight today, don’t fret. It will remain on the beverage menu, along with Dripp’s other outstanding offerings, including the above-mentioned Turkish coffee, espresso drinks, individually made drip coffees and the amazing Oji cold-brew coffee.

Dripp is at 13855 City Center Drive #3015, Chino Hills, in the Shoppes at Chino Hills.

Dripp opens tomorrow in Chino Hills

A new coffee bar, Dripp, opens in Chino Hills tomorrow.

It’s not just any coffee bar, however.

They’ve got something special.

Several somethings, in fact.

It all starts with individually ground and brewed drip coffees and espressos.

They also prepare Turkish coffees.

If tea is your preference, they carry only Harney & Sons Fine Teas…everything from English Breakfast to Hot Cinnamon Sunset.

Then things really get interesting.

They’ve got a pair of rare-in-the-U.S. Japanese Oji coffee drip apparatuses, which slowly brew coffee one drip at a time. It takes anywhere from six to ten hours to brew, but because they’re constantly brewing, you won’t have to wait that long for your iced coffee.

And we haven’t even gotten to the “Cream Bar.”

Chino Hills: Hello The Habit, goodbye City Broiler

In a story on this morning’s business page, writer Andrew Edwards (who I hear has a “Habit” habit himself) wrote about the upcoming opening of The Habit Burger Grill in the Chino Hills Marketplace.

This will be their first restaurant in the Inland Empire, although in 2008 they opened a location in La Verne.

They serve sandwiches and salads as well as burgers.

Click here to read Andrew’s story.

In less happy news, City Broiler announced a short while ago on Twitter and their Facebook page that they were shutting down as of today.

Click here to see the tweet.

I never had a chance to visit City Broiler. I only knew of them through their involvement in the Taste of Chino Valley and Chino Valley Restaurant Week events.

The restaurant had been open just shy of four years. Online reviews were mostly positive.
