Get a 60¢ bean, rice and cheese burrito at Baker’s Drive-Thru today

Another Wednesday, another Baker’s Drive-Thru 60th anniversary 60¢ deal!

Today’s (July 11) coupon deal is for a bean, rice and cheese burrito, which some of you may have gotten one (or two) for free a couple of weeks back.

We really like Baker’s BRC burritos, and think they’re made even better by substituting green sauce for the red.

You can find today’s coupon by clicking here.

As with all Baker’s coupons, you can either print the coupon or show it on your mobile device.

The usual restrictions apply: There’s a limit one 60 BRC burrito per coupon, one coupon per person or per car, and the offers are not valid with other coupons, discounts or coupons, although Baker’s often suggests on Facebook that you pair 60th anniversary deal with their other current offer, $1 iced tea. Go figure.

To catch all of Baker’s frequent deals, be sure to “Like” them on Facebook.

Baker’s Drive-Thru locations can be found throughout the Inland Empire.

Taco Bell goes highbrow, offers BOGO

Taco Bell, known lately for its lowbrow items such as the Doritos Locos Tacos, has gone highbrow.

Today (July 5), the fast food chain launched its new “Cantina Bell” menu of fresh-Mex bowls and burritos.

The menu additions appear to be an attempt to take a bite out of sales from rivals Chipotle Mexican Grill and Qdoba Mexican Grill.

The new entres sell for under $5, less than comparable items at either Chipotle or Qdoba.

Taco Bell is promoting the new entres with a buy-one-get-one-free coupon, valid today through Saturday (July 7). The coupon can be found on the chain’s Facebook page.

Taco Bell locations can be found throughout the Inland Empire.

Like hard-shell tacos? Thank Mitla Cafe!

San Bernardino’s Mitla Cafe, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, made a bit of a splash yesterday in a New York Times interview with Gustavo Arellano, author of Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America.

The interview took place at Mitla.

Mentioned in the article is the fact that Glen Bell (of Taco Bell fame) used to operate a burger stand (currently home to Amapola Rico Taco) across Sixth Street from Mitla.

According to Arellano’s research, Bell would frequently eat at Mitla and would see the long line of customers at Mitla’s walk-up window. He persuaded the owners to show him how the tacos were made and came up with a tool that would streamline the tortilla-frying process.

The following year after opening his burger stand, Bell began selling tacos.

And the rest, they say, is history.

It’s a great read.

Longtime favorite La Costa closes

This one hurts.

The San Bernardino La Costa Ostioneria, 464 S. Mount Vernon Ave., has closed.

In a city full of Mexican restaurants, La Costa, housed in a former Dairy Queen, was our top pick for authentic Mexican fare and delicious seafood.

Not sure exactly when it closed, but the most recent review on Yelp is from the end of January.

I realize there’s another location in Redlands and although I believe the two restaurants were connected at one time, they haven’t been for a long time.

I’m really going to miss La Costa. Somebody let us know if Lupe and crew surface somewhere else.

Sigh.

A 60 Baker’s bean burrito is a no-brainer…but do you go red or go green?

Life is full of choices.

Today’s (March 14) choice involves Baker’s Drive-Thru, 60 bean burritos, red sauce and green sauce.

That’s right… today’s Baker’s Drive-Thru 60th anniversary deal is a 60 red or green burrito.

Regular
followers of this blog know that the Inland Empire-based Baker’s is
celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and has been frequently
offering coupons for 60 deals for its Facebook fans (and others).

Unlike yesterday’s 60 taco deal, you’ve gotta have a coupon, which you can find here and either print out or display on your mobile device. And there’s a limit of one per coupon and one deal per person or per car. The coupon is valid today only.

Baker’s Drive-Thru locations can be found throughout the Inland Empire.

Go veggie on Fridays and save at Qdoba

If you’re one of those who’s going meatless on Fridays, you’ll be glad to hear of this deal.

Fridays through April 6, you can pick up a vegetarian or grilled veggie burrito and a regular fountain drink for only $6 (plus tax) at any SoCal Qdoba Mexican Grill. No coupon required.

It’s a pretty good deal, since normally the burrito by itself is more than $6.

Inland Empire locations include Upland, Redlands, Ontario and Moreno Valley.

Linda McCartney would’ve been proud.

San Manuel’s Serrano Buffet mixes it up

San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino has mixed things up in its Serrano Buffet.

The Mexican buffet night has moved to Friday night, replacing the typical seafood buffet, which is now on Wednesday.

Also, barbecue night has been moved to Tuesday.

But that’s not the big news.

The big news is that they’ve also revamped the menu.

Dine 909 was one of a select group of media folks invited to a special tasting dinner hosted by Chef Joe Craighead and Food and Beverage Manager Bob Svonkin a few weeks back. I enjoyed pretty much everything I sampled that evening.

The changes are welcome, since while I’ve always thought that the Serrano Buffet was good, I’ve also thought that there was room for improvement.

Head over the jump to read on!
