Well, of course, you're gonna have to work for it.
I'm aware it's extremely late notice, but the Inland Empire Resource Conservation District is conducting a cleanup of the neighborhood around Citrus Valley High School in Redlands.
And what about the free meals?
Breakfast and lunch will be provided for volunteers by Oscar's Mexican Restaurant and the Gourmet Pizza Shoppe (a Dine 909 favorite), both of Redlands, and Mimi's Cafe of San Bernardino.
All three restaurants are worth paying for meals at, by the way.
The cleanup takes place from 8 a.m. to noon today (November 7).
Clean up efforts will be assisted by volunteers from Hands on Inland Empire and from three of Redlands' high schools: Redlands, Redlands East Valley and Citrus Valley.
Interested in volunteering? Volunteers should meet outside Citrus Valley High School, 800 W. Pioneer Ave., Redlands.

One of the stumbling blocks seemed to be a sign near the 210 freeway which the developer wanted to use promote the fast food restaurant and other businesses at the center in which it would be located.
However, the center (on Greenspot Road) isn't directly adjacent to the freeway.
The city's planning commission initially denied the sign request and the developer appealed that decision. Now the developer has withdrawn that appeal and is instead working the developer whose center is next to the freeway to get space on that center's existing sign.
Whew!
With all the sign-wrangling seeming to be over, it appears that the Highland In-N-Out will soon be a reality.
I can almost smell the grilled onions now...

Tough luck, Rialto.
We know you have been waiting a very long time for your fresh & easy stores to open. You have our sympathy.
However, I'm glad since the San Bernardino fresh & easy opened Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. Whoo-hoo!
Tucked away in the back corner of a strip mall at the southeast corner of Highland and Del Rosa avenues, the new grocery store grew out of a space that used to be a Chinese restaurant, among other things.
And judging from the extraordinarily long line of customers waiting for the grand opening, I wasn't the only one eagerly looking forward to fresh & easy coming to town.

On the cusp of Wednesday's grand opening of a new Inland Empire fresh & easy (in Rancho Cucamonga), Dine 909 has discovered via fresh & easy's Web site that their San Bernardino store (1631 E. Highland Ave., at Del Rosa Avenue) is opening one week later, on October 7.
Hooray!
This is of little consolation to Loma Linda city officials, who have written a letter to the folks at fresh & easy requesting that they be considered when picking opening dates, according to a story appearing in tomorrow's Sun.
The Loma Linda location (Redlands Boulevard and Mountain View Avenue) has been complete for, oh, about ten months. Work started on the San Bernardino store only a couple of months ago.
Other completed-but-not-yet-open Inland Empire markets include Rialto (2015 N. Riverside Ave., at I-210) and Moreno Valley (22985 Cottonwood Ave., at Frederick Street). The Calimesa location (Calimesa Boulevard and Myrtlewood Drive) looks complete from the freeway.
Don't know what fresh & easy's strategy is, but I'm glad I'll no longer have to drive to Fontana to shop there.
As is customary, fresh & easy is donating $1,000 to a local charity at their grand opening. To nominate a charity for the San Bernardino opening, click here.
To read Stephen Wall's story regarding Loma Linda's fresh & easy-sized advertisement for fresh & easy, click here.
In other Inland Empire fresh & easy news, according to their Web site, both the Riverside (4080 Madison Ave., at Arlington Avenue) and Ontario (2645 E. Riverside Drive, at Archibald Avenue) are hiring.

From our friends over at the Redlands Daily Facts, we learn that the fine folks of the Old Spaghetti Factory are planning to open a restaurant in Redlands by mid-December.
The restaurant will occupy the space that formerly housed Babe's Slim PigN's, 1635 Industrial Park Ave.
In my opinion, it's a perfect fit. However, I predict the parking situation will be less perfect.
Construction will begin shortly to make minor changes before opening.
This will be OSF's third Inland Empire location, following Riverside and Rancho Cucamonga.

Well, it appears that food critic/radio show host Allen Borgen and Dine 909 have something in common...our love for Mill Creek Cattle Company in Redlands.
Allen's review hits the pages of the Sun and the Daily Bulletin today, and he gives it an astounding 4½ stars out of 5.
Wow! I think he liked it even more than we did.
I've been back to Mill Creek several times since I did my initial review, and have had a great experience each time.
I've tried a couple of their sandwiches, one of their breakfast burritos and, out of curiosity, their chili cheese fries.
All good. All filling.
I really appreciate restaurants that serve breakfast all day, and Mill Creek is one of those.
If you like BBQ, do yourself a favor and check them out if you haven't already done so.
If you, like me, are not a huge BBQ fan, don't despair, they have plenty of other treats there as well.
Click here to read Allan's review.
Not to be forgotten, also appearing in today's Sun and Bulletin is Elaine Lehman's review of Rancho Cucamonga's Stuft Pizza Cafe.
Elaine tried an 8-inch sub filled with cheese, veggies and Italian meats, along with a salad and a soda, all for only $6.25. Sounds like a really good deal and a great alternative to Subway/Togo's/Quiznos.
You can read Elaine's review here.

So I was poking around the Dine 909 Twitter account, seeing who was following us, and ended up wandering over to fresh & easy's Web site.
I went, as I usually do, to their Inland Empire locations page to check on the status of their long-delayed stores in Loma Linda, Rancho Cucamonga and Rialto.
Nothing new on those sites: The Loma Linda store is completed and is basically a fresh & easy-sized advertisement for fresh & easy. The Rancho Cucamonga store is hiring, but I know for a fact that they're still working on the interior of the store. The Rialto store is also complete and it looks like the nearby Walgreens is ready to open.
The surprise? They're opening a store at Highland and Del Rosa avenues right here in San Bernardino. The actual address is 1631 E. Highland Ave.
Apparently, it's going in the same center as dd's discounts, another lower-cased corporate entity.
As with the Rancho Cucamonga store, they're hiring.
Normally, I don't like surprises. This one I was all in favor of.

Redlands' Eureka!Burger is open!
Saw the sign when I drove by Saturday and decided to have dinner there Sunday night before driving out to Ontario and seeing "Moon." (Excellent science fiction film, by the way!)
Had the Panko Crusted Chicken Sandwich, something that wasn't offered on the preview lunch menu, and was eager to try.
It was very flavorful, and the shoestring fries were delicious. The only drawback was the ciabatta roll was hard in spots, probably due to the fact that it was toasted....a little too much.
All in all, though, a very pleasant dining experience.

This past Thursday, Dine 909 was part of a select group of people invited to preview the new Eureka!Burger in Redlands.
Eureka!Burger (their spelling) moved into the location last held by Charo Chicken, at the corner of Eureka Street and Pearl Avenue.
The sneak previews were held Wednesday and Thursday to show off the new gourmet burger restaurant, the brainchild of Executive Chef Ron Guidone and Managing Partner Nick Fontova.
Guidone is also chef and owner of Talia's and Mangiamo in Manhattan Beach.
First impressions?
I sampled the Memphis Southern Fried Chicken Salad and the Caesar Salad Burger, along with orders of Panko Crusted Onion Rings and Sweet Honey Cinnamon Potato Fries.
For as packed as the restaurant was, the food arrived very quickly.
I was less enamored of the salad than the burger, which was very flavorful. The onion rings were cooked to perfection, but needed...something. Perhaps some bleu cheese dressing to dip them in. The sweet potato fries were good, but I think Mill Creek has them beat by a hair.
Portions were good...I was full the rest of the day from splitting the salad, burger, fries and rings.
Burger buns, ciabatta rolls and some of the desserts are being provided by the folks over at West Coast Whoopies in Calimesa.
