Mexican food places are a dime a dozen here in the Inland Empire.
Some are better than others, obviously.
Based on what I had the other day, I'm willing to think Pepe's Mexican & Seafood Restaurant in Banning is one of the better ones.
All I had was a combination plate -- a chicken tamale and a cheese enchilada ($8.99) -- but the tamale was one of the best I've ever had in a restaurant.
It was moist, not too firm and loaded with flavor...in a word, delicious!
The enchilada wasn't quite as spectacular, but still good.
Both the rice and beans were fresh and tasted homemade.
My dining partner had the flautas dinner ($9.99). I thought the flautas could've sat in the fryer a little longer, but weren't bad otherwise.
I'm looking forward to returning and exploring their menu further.
The restaurant itself was recently renovated and is very modern, comfortable and inviting. It's a stark contrast to the more dated exterior. They added a full bar during the renovation.
Pepe's Mexican & Seafood Restaurant is at 2579 W. Ramsey St., Banning. You'll find pictures of the renovated interior and a link to their full menu on their Tumblr blog.

The Boy Scouts of America, who are celebrating their centennial this year, are encouraging their scouts to do a "Good Turn for America".
The members of the Boy Scouts of America, Grayback District, have chosen to collect food donations for distribution to local assistance agencies within their district.
They will be staffing collection barrels for non-perishable food and other items from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday (October 9) at Stater Bros., Vons, Gerrards, and Albertsons markets in the East Valley.
The donations collected will be distributed to the Family Service Association of Redlands, Yucaipa Family Assistance in the Yucaipa and Calimesa area, the Redlands Salvation Army, and H.E.L.P., Inc., in the San Gorgonio Pass area.
The scouts are undertaking this project due to the negative impact the current economy has had on the ability for these United Way agencies to serve the needy. The scouts are asking local shoppers to help them make up the shortfall as we move into the holiday season.
So if you see the scouts at your local market, please spend a couple of extra bucks in the store and get some non-perishable goods to drop in their containers.
Dine 909 thanks you in advance.

Features Editor John Weeks waxes slow and raw this week, and we've got all three of our food reviewers out there chowin' down.
In his column earlier this week, he pondered the Slow Food movement and the impact it might have on the Inland Empire's domination in the growth of the fast food industry.
In today's paper, he discusses raw food recipes, and gives you some tips on how to "go raw."
Click here to read his Slow Food column. His raw food article can be found here.
Elsewhere in today's paper, we've got restaurant reviews from Elaine Lehman, Allan Borgen and David Cohen.
Elaine visited the tantalizing Pomona Baking Co. Funny thing, though. I thought P-town was on the East Coast. Hmmm. You can read her review here.
Allan Borgen goes Italian at Fratello's Pizza & Pasta in Upland. Sounds like he found lots to amore at Fratello's. His review can be found here.
And finally, David Cohen found Italian food of a different kind at Palermo Pizza in Banning -- the kind with a Middle Eastern twist. Click here to read his review.
