The Boy Scouts of America, who are celebrating their centennial this year, are encouraging their scouts to do a "Good Turn for America".
The members of the Boy Scouts of America, Grayback District, have chosen to collect food donations for distribution to local assistance agencies within their district.
They will be staffing collection barrels for non-perishable food and other items from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday (October 9) at Stater Bros., Vons, Gerrards, and Albertsons markets in the East Valley.
The donations collected will be distributed to the Family Service Association of Redlands, Yucaipa Family Assistance in the Yucaipa and Calimesa area, the Redlands Salvation Army, and H.E.L.P., Inc., in the San Gorgonio Pass area.
The scouts are undertaking this project due to the negative impact the current economy has had on the ability for these United Way agencies to serve the needy. The scouts are asking local shoppers to help them make up the shortfall as we move into the holiday season.
So if you see the scouts at your local market, please spend a couple of extra bucks in the store and get some non-perishable goods to drop in their containers.
Dine 909 thanks you in advance.

No, not Loma Linda...yet.
Calimesa's fresh & easy opened its doors...oh, a little less than an hour ago. It's at 1126 Calimesa Blvd., just off Interstate 10.
Next up: The second Ontario location for the neighborhood market, at 2275 S. Euclid Ave. It opens two weeks from today, April 7. That'll be followed a week later (April 14) by the La Quinta store, 78-130 Calle Tampico.
Of course, still no word on the Loma Linda store or that third Moreno Valley store.
However, this Twitter conversation makes us think we'll hear something very soon regarding the former.
Of course, we've got our own little bird telling us things, so we'll be sure to let you know when we hear anything.

I had heard a couple of weeks back that West Coast Whoopies in Calimesa had closed.
I held off writing anything until after I had a chance to check it out for myself.
Lo and behold, after a recent tour of the Yucaipa Adobe, I drove over to Calimesa to find a giant "for lease" sign in the spot formerly occupied by West Coast Whoopies.
However, the Web site for West Coast Whoopies is still alive and kicking.
I remember from our visit last year that Queen Whoopie Maker Alisa Evans had her fingers in lots of pies, so to speak, and at the time, they had just started a separate facility somewhere in Yucaipa.
So, the retail bakery may be gone, but I'd like to believe the Whoopie pies (and cakes and breads and more) live on!

Were you one of the first 100 customers in line at the new Calimesa Denny's this morning?
If you were, you got a Grand Slam a year for free.
The rest of us will just have to pay like everyone else.
Unless you're some sort of time-traveling wizard who can travel back to 7 a.m. December 7 to get a free year's worth of Grand Slams.
Of course, if you are some sort of time-traveling wizard, you've probably got better things to do than travel back in time to get free Denny's Grand Slams.
Or perhaps not.
The rest of us non-time-travelers can now visit the new Denny's at 1184 Calimesa Blvd. (at Myrtlewood Drive).

I felt privileged to meet Queen Whoopie Maker Alisa Evans, who invited us "behind the curtain" to see whoopie pies as they were being made.
I was definitely impressed by her work ethic.
But I digress. Let's start at the beginning...
What's a whoopie pie? It's similar to a Hostess Suzy Q, but fresh, delicious and...round. Imagine two cupcake tops with frosting in-between. That's a whoopie pie.
West Coast Whoopies makes their whoopie pies in a variety of flavors. I tried several: Aunty Anne's Red Velvet, Cheryl's Snickerdoodle and the limited-edition Babe's Orange Blossom. My favorite, though, was the Boston Original, delicious chocolate cake with creme filling. Yum!

From the Redlands Daily Facts, we've got good news for your sweet tooth.
Ohana Yogurt Shop will be celebrating its third anniversary from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 18. They will have music, giveaways, and best of all, their yogurt will be 25¢ per ounce instead of the usual 38¢.
Ohana is a pretty decent self-serve frozen yogurt place and is conveniently open late during the summer to satisfy those after-the-Redlands-Bowl-concert cravings. I'll probably head on over to the celebration.
They've got new competition, however.
The previously-mentioned Swirly D'lite frozen yogurt opened April 2. I drove by the other night, but they were already closed. Ended up going to Wienerschnitzel and trying their Bananas Foster sundae. Mmm! Swirly D'lite will have to wait for another day.
Finally, if you've ever wanted to try a Whoopie pie, now's your chance. The Daily Facts has been printing $5 in "Whoopie bucks" in Wednesday's, Thursday's and Friday's editions. The coupon is good for anything at West Coast Whoopies' Calimesa bakery. The "bucks" are good through the month of April.
I've been meaning to get out there to try them, and the "Cheryl's Snickerdoodle" and "Aunty Anne's Red Velvet" varieties have certainly piqued my interest. This is just more incentive -- like I needed it.
For more info, read the original Facts blurb here.
