Recent restaurant transitions

Jaws.pngJust when you thought it was safe to go back into the neighborhood eatery...

Jaws Fish, Shrimp and Chicken (whose 99¢ deals are shown at left) has moved into the space formerly occupied by Serrano's Triple Cheese at 2388 Arden Ave., San Bernardino.

New China Wok has opened where the Sixth Street Deli used to be, 1231 E. Washington St., Suite C, Colton.

The Redlands Open Kitchen has moved from 402 Orange St. to 1532 Barton Road.

The Highland Open Kitchen Buffet is now called Best Kitchen Buffet.

Chipotle Mexican Grill has opened in the Ontario Mills food court.

Apparently, the Upland Togo's at 110 S. Mountain Ave., Suite B, has gone under. (Thanks to reader Carl for the update!)

Citrus Deli and Naan Cafe have opened in Redlands. Both are in the Citrus Village Plaza, 700 E. Redlands Blvd. Click here to read Ed Castro's article on the new eateries.

Arby's out, George's in

Driving through Colton, I saw that the former Arby's at 1320 E. Washington St., which closed earlier this year, is being replaced with a George's Burgers.

George's currently has locations in San Bernardino, Rialto and Fontana.

George's has lots of good breakfasts, sandwiches, burgers and Mexican food on its menu.

But, sadly for Arby's fans, no roast beef.

Colton Food Connection now open

We got so wrapped up in the flood of food truck news this week we almost forgot to let you all know that the Colton Food Connection has opened!

This is the fourth location for the family restaurant. The Grand Terrace and Riverside locations have been around for years, and a Norco location opened earlier this year.

Went there and had breakfast for dinner Sunday night, and had a great meal.

They've even added some decent deals to the mix, including a $3.99 two-egg breakfast and a $4.99 chicken-fried steak breakfast.

The restaurant, which has been open a couple of weeks, looks nicer than I ever remember it looking in its previous incarnation as Bob's Big Boy.

Food Connection is at 201 E. Valley Blvd.

Big box o' groceries

So, the other day I went to the Colton Wal-Mart and was surprised to find that they now have fresh produce, meats and other refrigerated items along with the frozen goods and non-refrigerated groceries they used to carry.

Only now, they carry a lot more groceries than they used to.

They even have a small deli and a small bakery.

A friend told me that the Redlands Target is also gearing up for fresh produce and meats. They're remodeling now -- and have already expanded their non-refrigerated grocery selection -- and are expecting to have everything available June 1.

The Upland Target has already been reconfigured and is selling fresh groceries.

The best way I can describe it is that they are mini versions of their "Super" counterparts.

Out with the old, in with the new in Colton

The rather unassuming corner of Ninth Street and Valley Boulevard in Colton is soon to be home to not one, but two new restaurants.

One of them, Red Hot Café, is already open. (Thanks to reader Steve for the tip!)

Red Hot replaces the been-there-since-the-dawn-of-time Rickshaw Boy at 182 E. Valley Blvd., which has been closed for about a year.

An LED sign advertised hot wings and hot links.

Catty-corner from Red Hot will soon be the third Food Connection location.

Food Connection is moving in where the short-lived Bob's Big Boy was, at 201 E. Valley Blvd.

Bob's closed "for remodeling" back in May of this year and ended up being remodeled into a completely different restaurant.

The new Food Connection will join their current locations in Grand Terrace and Riverside.

I see this as a step in the right direction. I've enjoyed dozens of meals at both Food Connection restaurants, but had nothing but lackluster meals at that particular Bob's.

Colton Zendejas reopens, Big Boy closes "for remodeling"

For those of you bemoaning the loss of Zendejas from the Colton restaurant scene, weep no more!

The rumors are true...Zendejas has reopened.

I drove by last week and there was a giant "Now Open" banner hanging on the front of the building.

They closed abruptly last August after Colton Police ordered the restaurant to shut down its dance floor operations and the city kept the site's dance permit in limbo.

The entertainment revenue was keeping the restaurant afloat in the slow economy.

Well, apparently, they've worked out their issues with the city.

If you want to check out the resurrected Zendejas, it's at 1030 S. Mount Vernon Ave.

A little ways north of there, the Bob's Big Boy at 201 E. Valley Blvd. has closed "for remodeling."

Usually, that's a euphemism for "out of business," but when I drove by there were actually workers milling about in the restaurant. That's probably a good sign.

I remember how excited I was when I found out in 2006 that the restaurant was preparing to open and when they finally opened in early 2007.

And how that excitement was quelled the first time I went there.

Subsequent visits were equally lackluster.

Let's hope the "remodeling" means they're getting their act together and will open with renewed focus on customer service.

In the meantime, I highly recommend two other Inland Empire Bob's Big Boys -- in Calimesa and, especially, Norco.

Openings here and there

It's time to catch up on a handful of new restaurants I've noticed while tooling around the Inland Empire...

Late last year, a little bit of Norco moved into Colton as Norco's Famous Sixth Street Deli and Grill took spot occupied briefly by Submarina at 1231 E. Washington St., Suite C.

I haven't been to either the Norco or the Colton location yet, but according to their Web site, the May special is a chicken fried steak or chicken fried chicken sandwich, chips and a small fountain drink for $5.99.

That's either a lot late or a little early.

Also, another branch of Corky's Kitchen and Bakery opened up recently at 2019 N. Riverside Ave., Suite 11, in Rialto, just north of the 210 freeway.

I've noticed the Rancho Cucamonga Corky's while driving on the 210 and have been wanting to try it, but I didn't realize the most important part...Corky's is open 24 hours a day!

I'm always on the lookout for decent late night food, and Corky's is pretty well-reviewed on Yelp. I'm looking forward to giving the Rialto restaurant a try.

¡Adiós, Colton Zendejas!

As you may have read in today's Biz page, Zendejas' Colton location has closed.

The restaurant had recently remodeled to expand its bar and add a second dance floor, which ran afoul of the restaurant's conditional-use permit with the city.

Colton Police ordered the establishment to cease its nightclub activities as of August 1, and the owner decided to shut down.

In other words, the restaurant couldn't survive solely as a restaurant.

Prospective diners were greeted by a hand-written note saying: "Thank you for your support.  We have relocated to 1970 Ostrems Way in San Bernardino."

Odd choice of wording, since that San Bernardino location has been open for years.

Personally, I can't remember the last time I ate at the Colton location. Or the San Bernardino location, which is only about a block from The Sun.

You can read Matt Wrye's full story here.

Zendejas' closing makes the third restaurant in that neighborhood that I've noticed has gone belly-up.
