Want free breakfast and lunch today?

Well, of course, you're gonna have to work for it.

I'm aware it's extremely late notice, but the Inland Empire Resource Conservation District is conducting a cleanup of the neighborhood around Citrus Valley High School in Redlands.

And what about the free meals?

Breakfast and lunch will be provided for volunteers by Oscar's Mexican Restaurant and the Gourmet Pizza Shoppe (a Dine 909 favorite), both of Redlands, and Mimi's Cafe of San Bernardino.

All three restaurants are worth paying for meals at, by the way.

The cleanup takes place from 8 a.m. to noon today (November 7).

Clean up efforts will be assisted by volunteers from Hands on Inland Empire and from three of Redlands' high schools: Redlands, Redlands East Valley and Citrus Valley.

Interested in volunteering? Volunteers should meet outside Citrus Valley High School, 800 W. Pioneer Ave., Redlands.

Old Spaghetti Factory coming to Redlands

From our friends over at the Redlands Daily Facts, we learn that the fine folks of the Old Spaghetti Factory are planning to open a restaurant in Redlands by mid-December.

The restaurant will occupy the space that formerly housed Babe's Slim PigN's, 1635 Industrial Park Ave.

In my opinion, it's a perfect fit. However, I predict the parking situation will be less perfect.

Construction will begin shortly to make minor changes before opening.

This will be OSF's third Inland Empire location, following Riverside and Rancho Cucamonga.

Yet another take on Mill Creek

Well, it appears that food critic/radio show host Allen Borgen and Dine 909 have something in common...our love for Mill Creek Cattle Company in Redlands.

Allen's review hits the pages of the Sun and the Daily Bulletin today, and he gives it an astounding 4½ stars out of 5.

Wow! I think he liked it even more than we did.

I've been back to Mill Creek several times since I did my initial review, and have had a great experience each time.

I've tried a couple of their sandwiches, one of their breakfast burritos and, out of curiosity, their chili cheese fries.

All good. All filling.

I really appreciate restaurants that serve breakfast all day, and Mill Creek is one of those.

If you like BBQ, do yourself a favor and check them out if you haven't already done so.

If you, like me, are not a huge BBQ fan, don't despair, they have plenty of other treats there as well.

Not to be forgotten, also appearing in today's Sun and Bulletin is Elaine Lehman's review of Rancho Cucamonga's Stuft Pizza Cafe.

Elaine tried an 8-inch sub filled with cheese, veggies and Italian meats, along with a salad and a soda, all for only $6.25. Sounds like a really good deal and a great alternative to Subway/Togo's/Quiznos.

Update...Eureka!Burger is open

Redlands' Eureka!Burger is open!

Saw the sign when I drove by Saturday and decided to have dinner there Sunday night before driving out to Ontario and seeing "Moon." (Excellent science fiction film, by the way!)

Had the Panko Crusted Chicken Sandwich, something that wasn't offered on the preview lunch menu, and was eager to try.

It was very flavorful, and the shoestring fries were delicious. The only drawback was the ciabatta roll was hard in spots, probably due to the fact that it was toasted....a little too much.

All in all, though, a very pleasant dining experience.

Coming very soon to Redlands...Eureka!Burger

This past Thursday, Dine 909 was part of a select group of people invited to preview the new Eureka!Burger in Redlands.

Eureka!Burger (their spelling) moved into the location last held by Charo Chicken, at the corner of Eureka Street and Pearl Avenue.

The sneak previews were held Wednesday and Thursday to show off the new gourmet burger restaurant, the brainchild of Executive Chef Ron Guidone and Managing Partner Nick Fontova.

Guidone is also chef and owner of Talia's and Mangiamo in Manhattan Beach.

First impressions?

I sampled the Memphis Southern Fried Chicken Salad and the Caesar Salad Burger, along with orders of Panko Crusted Onion Rings and Sweet Honey Cinnamon Potato Fries.

For as packed as the restaurant was, the food arrived very quickly.

I was less enamored of the salad than the burger, which was very flavorful. The onion rings were cooked to perfection, but needed...something. Perhaps some bleu cheese dressing to dip them in. The sweet potato fries were good, but I think Mill Creek has them beat by a hair.

Portions were good...I was full the rest of the day from splitting the salad, burger, fries and rings.

Burger buns, ciabatta rolls and some of the desserts are being provided by the folks over at West Coast Whoopies in Calimesa.

A taste of Caribbean creole comes to the I.E. tonight

dhat_flyer.jpgLooking to bring a little island flavor into your life? Then read on.

Dhat Island is bringing Caribbean Creole cuisine to Redlands, and is celebrating with a grand opening mixer and sampling from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight (June 30).

Dhat Island is at 509 N. Eureka St., at Stuart Avenue, in the former Partners Pantry location. They opened June 23.

The restaurant offers catering, lunch pickup and delivery, and will likely be open for dinner soon.

Owner Angela Alcé and her husband, Carlo, have family from the Caribbean, and Dhat Island serves a fusion of traditional food from several islands.

Alcé, who has lived in Redlands nearly ten over twelve years, has previously catered in the Los Angeles, San Diego and Orange County areas.

Finally Friday...

TGIF!

It's been a really long week for me, having worked the holiday, so I am ready for the weekend!

Before I head out, however, I've got to point you to that Friday fixture here at Dine 909...reviews!

First up is the oft-reviewed Monalisa (or is that Mona Lisa?) Italian Food in Redlands.

Elaine Lehman tackled the 6-inch meatball sandwich ($3.95 for the sandwich, chips and soda? Wow!) and lived to tell.

Click here to read her full review.

David Cohen also headed out to Redlands for his review. He reviews Heska's Soup and Sandwich, which is located in a strip mall at Lugonia and Wabash avenues.

It's been there over 11 years and I've never heard of it until now.

And despite being called Heska's Soup and Sandwich, they also sell salads, breakfast items and other entrées, such as teriyaiki chicken.

Happy birthday to Hangar 24!

Redlands brewery Hangar 24 is celebrating its one-year anniversary with a mystery brew which will only be available this Saturday.

What's in this mystery beer, you might ask?

You'll have to wait until Saturday to find out. The only clue to the anniversary ale is that it's made of local ingredients that are only available for two weeks out of the year.

Hmm.

The beer will be served during the brewery's anniversary celebration from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday (May 30). Hangar 24 is at 1710 Sessums Drive in Redlands.

Redlands Romano's reviewed

The staff of the Redlands Daily Facts went to the new Romano's in Redlands recently. (Without even inviting Dine 909? Ow.)

Anyway, the crew had good things to say about the food. No surprise there, right George?

Their biggest complaint was about the service. And if you're thinking about getting a pizza from Romano's, but you've only got a half-hour for lunch? You're gonna go hungry...there's about a 40 minute wait for pizza orders.

The gang ended up spending about an hour and a half there on their lunch hour. Good thing the boss was with 'em.

Most of them were impressed with the food, though, and vowed to return at dinner time, when they wouldn't be under a time constraint.

I imagine, with time, Romano's will fix the service issues. Let's hope so.

More Hangar 24 for you to enjoy

Just in time for National Beverage Day comes this good news for good beer fans!

According to this story in yesterday's Redlands Daily Facts, Redlands' Hangar 24 Brewery's tasting room is now open every day.

Hangar24.pngThe brewery -- whose offerings are available at such "fine" establishments as the Pink Flamingo in Redlands and the Party Doll in San Bernardino -- has been open a year. The expanded tasting room hours are in response to public interest.

Their new tasting room hours will be 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. This weekend will be the first that the brewery will open for regular tasting on a Sunday.

As one who has had the privilege of sampling some of the Hangar 24 brews at the Gourmet Pizza Shoppe in Redlands, I encourage those of you who like good craft beers to go check them out. As a plus, beers in development are sometimes offered at the brewery before they are available elsewhere.

Hangar 24 is also one of the participants in UCR's "Primavera in the Gardens" on May 17.

The brewery is at 1710 Sessums Drive, across the street from Redlands Municipal Airport.
