AJ Barile's Chicago Pizza has done it again!

The Yucaipa restaurant has taken first place in the Western U.S. at last month's International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas.

This is the second year in a row they've taken home the prize.

The winning "traditional" pizza entry this year was Paulie's Pesto.

Dine 909 congratulates AJ Barile's Chicago Pizza and Chef Paul Duran!

AJ Barile's Chicago Pizza is at 32693 Yucaipa Blvd., Yucaipa.

Gourmet Pizza Shoppes: New year, new day

Come 2011, there'll be more to love at the Gourmet Pizza Shoppes in Redlands and Yucaipa/Calimesa.

16.67% more, actually.

That's because the Dine 909 Favorite will be open seven days a week.

The Redlands store had traditionally been closed on Mondays, while the Yucaipa/Calimesa location was closed on Tuesdays.

Well...no more!

Both stores will be closed Friday and Saturday during the weeks of Christmas and New Year's.

Gourmet Pizza Shoppes are at 120 E. State St., in Redlands and at 13661 Calimesa Blvd. in Yucaipa.

First bites: Matano's Little Italy

Oh, how I hate giving away my secrets.

But some secrets are too good not to share.

Matano's Little Italy, a tiny Italian deli in old town Yucaipa, is one such secret.

A co-worker had told me about them, and my initial attempt to try Matano's ended in failure when I got to the shop and saw a note that they were on vacation...for a month.

Undaunted, I returned a few weeks later and am I ever glad I was persistent.

I had the best sandwich I've had in a very long time.

Boy Scouts' "good turn" food drive this Saturday

The Boy Scouts of America, who are celebrating their centennial this year, are encouraging their scouts to do a "Good Turn for America".

The members of the Boy Scouts of America, Grayback District, have chosen to collect food donations for distribution to local assistance agencies within their district.

They will be staffing collection barrels for non-perishable food and other items from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday (October 9) at Stater Bros., Vons, Gerrards, and Albertsons markets in the East Valley.

The donations collected will be distributed to the Family Service Association of Redlands, Yucaipa Family Assistance in the Yucaipa and Calimesa area, the Redlands Salvation Army, and H.E.L.P., Inc., in the San Gorgonio Pass area.

The scouts are undertaking this project due to the negative impact the current economy has had on the ability for these United Way agencies to serve the needy. The scouts are asking local shoppers to help them make up the shortfall as we move into the holiday season.

So if you see the scouts at your local market, please spend a couple of extra bucks in the store and get some non-perishable goods to drop in their containers.

Dine 909 thanks you in advance.

Follow the jump to find the donation locations.

Yucaipa gets a Dairy Queen

YucaipaDQ.jpgDon't have a ton of information on this one, but the new Yucaipa Dairy Queen/Orange Julius at 12045 Fifth St. (at Yucaipa Boulevard) is opening tomorrow (July 9).

They're having a grand opening from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday (July 10).

Also, ice cream cakes will be half-price the first week they're open.

Ah. Just in time for the summer heat!

For updates, check their Facebook page.

Well, I guess that's all you really need to know.

First bites: The Fat Greek

My Big Fat Greek Dinner only consisted of a salad, but oh, what a salad it was!

I ordered a falafel salad, which consisted of greens, thin-sliced cucumber, onion, tomato, Kalamata olives, feta cheese, oregano and, of course, sliced falafel. It came with a delicious, but not overpowering, lemony Greek dressing and lemon slices. It was also accompanied by a pepperocini and some warm pita bread slices.

It was the most flavorful salad I've had in a very long time.

My dining companion had a pastrami sandwich that was big enough for two meals, and we split an order of house-made onion rings.

Everything was delicious, and the customer service was fantastic.

Even though it was our first time there, Nick and company made us feel like we were longtime customers.

Of course, Dine 909 has company in enjoying the food at the Fat Greek. Sometimes it takes us a while to get with the program, though.

Unfortunately, we were too full to try one of the delicious-looking desserts. Perhaps next time, which I'm sure will be very soon.

The Fat Greek is at 33265 Yucaipa Blvd. in Yucaipa. Their website contains a wealth of information, including a full menu (exactly the same as in the restaurant), coupons and a mouth-watering photo gallery.

First bites: AJ Barile's Chicago Pizza

After hearing the news that AJ Barile's Chicago Pizza took first place in the western U.S (and fifth in the world!) at the International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas earlier this year, I'd been wanting to try them

This past Friday, I finally got a chance to do so.

Was it the best pizza I've ever had?

Um...not quite. But it was very good.

Let's get this out of the way: When you think of Chicago pizza, you think of thick crust, deep dish pies, right? AJ Barile's has thin crust.

But, oh, what a crust!

In case you didn't catch it...

In Friday's paper, Allan Borgen reviewed Christophe's of Upland, which was greatly anticipated when it opened last year.

Perfect timing, since Upland's Lemon Festival is this weekend. What a way to kill two birds with one stone...visit the Lemon Festival and dine at Christophe's!

Did Allan like Christophe's? I'll say! Five out of five stars.

Read his review here.

Elsewhere, Elaine "Lunch with 'Lainey" Lehman heads to Yucaipa to have lunch at the Kopper Kettle Kafe. From her review, it seems like a perfectly fine place to have lunch.

You can read for yourself here.

Speaking of Yucaipa, Friday I had lunch at one of that city's most honored restaurants for the first time...but you'll have to wait a couple of days to find out which restaurant and to read my take on it. Stay tuned!

When it rains, etc.

So I was watching Cliff Young's Out to Eat show on KVCR the other day, and one of the segments he had was on The Fat Greek in Yucaipa.

Looked like an interesting place...someplace I'd want to check out the next time I'm in that neck of the woods.

So imagine my surprise when I saw which restaurant Allan Borgen was reviewing in today's paper.

Yep, The Fat Greek!

Coincidence? Perhaps.

But guess who was the first to review it? Neither Cliff nor Allan, but Elaine "Lunch with 'Lanie" Lehman!

Back in April, Elaine stopped in for lunch at The Fat Greek and wrote a review.

Way to go, Elaine!
