Calling all High Desert hot dog aficionados!

The Wienerschnitzel at 12951 Hesperia Road in Victorville will be celebrating its grand opening from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow (August 20).

They'll be offering buy-one-get-one-free chili dogs during the grand opening.

They'll also have a ribbon cutting ceremony, a hot dog eating contest (winner gets free chili dogs for a year and an iPod), raffles and a prize wheel, a bounce house, a DJ and free cake!

Five Guys targets the High Desert

I happened to do a check of Five Guys Burgers and Fries' locations map earlier this week and discovered something.

In addition to previously-known planned locations in San Bernardino, Moreno Valley, Mira Loma and Corona, they've also listed two future restaurants in the High Desert.

One is in Victorville, at 15655 Roy Rogers Drive. The other is in Hesperia, at 12795 Main St.

Both are set to be open 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.

Both are right off the 15 Freeway.

No word on a time frame for when they will open. Five Guys typically waits until restaurants' opening days before announcing them via Twitter and Facebook.
Not only do you get a free $10 FunCard for yourself, but you'll be helping the fight against cystic fibrosis.

Here's how it works: Print out this coupon, take it to John's Incredible Pizza Co., give them the coupon, purchase an adult buffet and beverage, and you'll get a free $10 FunCard.

John's will also donate $1 to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's Great Strides 2011.

Unfortunately, today (May 20) is the last day to get in on the deal and help out.

John's Incredible Pizza has three locations in the Inland Empire:

 • Victorville: 14766 Bear Valley Road
 • Montclair: 5280 Arrow Highway
 • Riverside: 6187 Valley Springs Parkway

Thanksgiving giving begins today

St. Bernardine Medical Center is helping to kick off the holiday spirit a tad early this year.

Beginning at 4 p.m. today (November 23), they're celebrating their 16th year of providing Thanksgiving dinners for those who might otherwise go without.

The event will be held at the hospital's Family Focus Center, 1931 N. E St. in San Bernardino.

They're expecting to serve more than 800 people.

In addition, they're hosting a free health fair, at which free flu shots, blood pressure checks and dental screenings will be offered. Those attending can also receive health information and mini health kits -- which include purifying hand gel and tips on how to remain healthy during flu season -- will be given out.

Also, families will also have the opportunity to choose from coats donated through the center's coat and jacket drive.

Follow the jump to find other volunteer opportunities in the Inland Empire.

Free Ben & Jerry's! Free Ben & Jerry's! Free Ben & Jerry's!

Thanks to the anonymous tipster who commented on our Tillamook Cheese entry from last week letting us know that today (March 23) is Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shops.

The Scoop Shops are few and far between here in the Inland Empire, but we have a handful:

 • Rancho Cucamonga: 12513 North Main Street (Victoria Gardens)
 • Victorville: 14400 Bear Valley Road, Space #729
 • Palm Springs: 110 South Palm Canyon Drive
 • Rancho Mirage: 71800 Hwy 111 (The River at Rancho Mirage)
According to the online map, they're all participating in Free Cone Day today.

Once upon a time, there was a Scoop Shop in Riverside, but it closed a couple of years back.

Hey, anonymous tipster, you do know that Tillamook also sells ice cream, don't you? Are you a Ben & Jerry's employee trying to drum up interest? Ben? Jerry?

Free cones are available until 8 p.m. tonight. Enjoy!

Helping out for the holidays

Now that we are sliding into the holiday season, several Inland Empire eateries and grocery stores are inviting customers to help out the less fortunate.

First up, we have Victorville's Johnny Rebs', which is sponsoring a Thanksgiving food drive. Those who bring at least two canned or boxed foods suitable for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner (e.g. a box of stuffing or mashed potato flakes, a can of gravy or cranberry sauce, etc.) will receive 15% off their meal.

The donated food will be given to the Victor Valley Rescue Mission, which will be holding its Thanksgiving Banquet for the needy from noon to 3 p.m on Wednesday, November 25. Last year, the mission served nearly 700 Thanksgiving meals, this year they expect to serve over 1,000.

In other words, your donations to Johnny Rebs' will definitely be put to good use.

So, if you want to help the hungry and "put some South in your mouth" at the same time (and get 15% off!), visit the Victorville Johnny Rebs' at 15051 Seventh St.

Also, if you are interested in donating a turkey to Victor Valley Rescue Mission, please call (760) 955-5958.

High Desert gets another Chipotle

From ace photojournalist/vegetarian/former Dine 909 contributor Eric Reed, we get word that the High Desert has gotten its second Chipotle Mexican Grill.

The new Victorville location is at 14120 Bear Valley Rd., Suite 100, just off I-15 near the Mall of Victor Valley.

It joins the Apple Valley location, which is due east at 19179 Bear Valley Road.

He's glad to have two of the "best burrito shops in the known world," according to his email.

I'm glad that I have new lunch option on my way to Las Vegas.

He's still waiting for that second High Desert fresh & easy location to open, however...

French toast smoothie or horchata shake? You decide!

Making my way back from Las Vegas last night, I suggested we stop at Sonic in Victorville -- since it's a rarity here in Southern California -- and grab a snack.

To my delight, I saw they had a Sticky Bun Dough Blast. Of course, I was curious to know if it was good or not, so I asked the lone carhop, the very helpful K3vin. He said it was pretty good, so I decided it was worth a shot.

I'm very glad I did.

Sonic's "Blasts" are their equivalent of a McFlurry/Blizzard/etc. -- ice cream with candy or other sweet treats blended in. The Sticky Bun Dough Blast has bits of sticky bun dough -- sweetly cinnamony with a hint of maple syrup flavor -- and praline pecans blended throughout and sprinkled on top, with a dollop of whipped cream. What a delicious treat!

Of course, at 578 calories for a regular size, it's not something you want to have every day, but as a very occasional treat I'd have to say it was worth the extra calories.

I just couldn't decide if it tasted more like French toast or horchata. You'll have to try one for yourself and let us know. Don't wait too long...the Sticky Bun Dough Blast is only available for a limited time.
