Palm Springs Food Truck Festival a big success, more to follow

Congratulations to Cliff Young!

News accounts estimated the crowds at Saturday's (February 4) inaugural Palm Springs Food Truck Festival, curated by the KVCR-TV Out to Eat host, at nearly 10,000.

The event helped raise money for the Palm Springs High School music program and marching band, victims of a burglary last month.

The band played (beautifully) for attendees and students staffed the beverage stations.

The weather was plentiful and most folks seemed to be enjoying themselves.

I don't expect this to be a one-off event. Cliff is hoping to make this a semi-annual event, and is thinking of incorporating food trucks into other events he organizes.

We had a great time chatting with Inland Empire food truck operators, including Yucaipa-based Stella Pierre's Gourmet Grub (offering a caramel-Sriracha sauce with chocolate-covered bacon is sheer genius), Apple Valley's Where's the Fire? Gourmet Pizza (regulars at Redlands Market Night and the High Desert Farmers Market) and Suite 106 Cupcakery (which had yet another sell-out).

More food truck events are on the horizon, including three later this month. Click the jump to see a list.

You know those other guys.

They'll give you a $5 bonus gift card when you purchase a $25 gift card. But remember to use that bonus gift card before it expires...at the end of January.

Or even worse, they'll make you spend $50 before you see any kind of bonus.

Not Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar. Oh, no.

Reserve and dine at Fleming's before December 30, spend $50 and they'll knock $25 off your bill.

Wow.

And if you bring the whole crew and the bill comes to more than $150, you'll also get a bonus $25 gift card to spend in the first three months in 2012. Spend over $300 and get a bonus $50 gift card.

Indio International Tamale Festival is this weekend

The Indio International Tamale Festival takes place this weekend.

Over the last couple of years, it has become a tradition in the Dine 909 household to shlep out to Indio on Saturday, gorge ourselves on tamales and other goodies and then take in the Palm Springs Festival of Lights parade that evening.

The tamale fest runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both Saturday (December 3) and Sunday (December 4), with a parade kicking off the whole shebang at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The featival takes place in downtown Indio between Highway 111 and Indio Boulevard, along Miles Avenue, Towne Street, Smurr Street and Requa Avenue.

Admission and parking are free.

Of course, it's not all about the tamales. For this year's entertainment schedule (Rose Royce!), click here.

If you happen to live near (or are willing to take a drive to) Cathedral City and want to help out the AIDS Assistance Program, then mark your calendar for Monday (May 2).

From 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, the Cathedral City Sizzler at 31875 Date Palm Drive will celebrate its grand re-opening and will be donating all its sales during that time to the charity.

The restaurant, which was formerly owned by a franchisee, closed in December 2009. It is re-opening as a company-owned restaurant.

Kudos to the Cathedral City Sizzler for their generosity!
