Claremont High School food truck fundraiser is Saturday

We here in San Bernardino County are relative newbies to the food truck game, with the first major food truck festival happening earlier this year, and a lessening of restrictions by county officials happening during the summer.

Claremont, however, is in Los Angeles County.

How come I haven't heard of food truck festivals happening there?

Well, it just so happens there's one coming this Saturday (November 19).

It's being put on by the Claremont High School Music Boosters and will benefit the school's bands and color guard.

Dubbed the Food Truck Mania, it's a smallish event -- 14 trucks are currently in the lineup -- but in my experience, smaller events are better if you want to actually eat something. The lines tend to be smaller and shorter lines usually translate to quicker prep times.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Claremont High School, 1600 N. Indian Hill Blvd.

Admission is $3 for CUSD students with ID, and $5 for everyone else. Those under five are free.

For more information, or to purchase tickets, click here.

(Update: In addition to the food trucks, various student groups will also have booths there, as well as the Mt. Baldy and Claremont chambers of commerce with coupons for local businesses; Claremont Toyota, which is having a drawing for an iPod Touch; and SolarGem giving away a $50 gift certificate. Also, the Garlic Scapes truck has joined the event.)

If you love beer, and want to sample from over 60 craft brews, while listening to live bands and chowing down on delicious grub, then you've probably already gotten your ticket for Saturday's (October 8) return of the California Beer Festival to Claremont.

You can skip the remainder of this post and continue on with your day.

For the rest of you beer lovers...what are you waiting for? The tickets ($40) for the festival have nearly sold out!

Not only do you get to sample the best local (and not-so-local) breweries have to offer, but the event is a fundraiser for the for the Gen Giammanco Foundation, which provides financial support to student athletes.

The event will take place from 12:30 to 5 p.m. at the Claremont Packing House, 532 W. First St.

Tickets (if still available) can be purchased online, and in Claremont at Rhino Records and Eureka Burger.

A $25 designated driver ticket, which includes a free meal, is also available.

Follow the jump to see the participating breweries.

As expected, the Claremont Norms Restaurant (807 S. Indian Hill Blvd.) opened this morning (August 23) at 7 a.m.

And if you're planning to head on over and check out the new restaurant, which you can do anytime, since they're open 24/7, you might want to print out this coupon first.

There's more information, including a locator map, on that location's page on the Norms website.

Norms coming to Claremont

On the off chance you haven't noticed the insanely tall (one foot shy of 100 feet) sign just off the 10 Freeway, Norms is coming to Claremont.

It'll be the second Inland Empire location for the always-open Southern California chain, following a Riverside location that opened several years ago.

The Claremont Norms is at 407 Auto Center Drive (at Indian Hill Boulevard) 807 S. Indian Hill Blvd., where a Chili's once was.

The restaurant looked pretty much complete during a drive-by this weekend, and is a hot topic on the chain's Facebook page. The official response from the company is that it'll open by the end of the month, although it appears they are aiming for next week.

The sign, which dwarfs all surrounding signs, was a topic of one of Daily Bulletin columnist David Allen's column's last month, and he risked life and limb to take pictures for his blog.

fresh & easy coming to Claremont

Even while its long-completed Loma Linda store has yet to open (and had its signs covered over to ensure that folks know the store is not open), fresh & easy has plans to open a store in Claremont.

The store will be built on the northwest corner of the Peppertree Square Shopping Center, replacing a former Wherehouse Music store.

The center is on the southeast corner of Indian Hill Boulevard and Arrow Highway.

Demolition of the existing building is scheduled to take place in January, with construction to follow in the spring.

Loving Hut opens in Claremont

Somehow, I missed this one, but the Claremont location of the Loving Hut opened last month.

The restaurant, one of a global chain of vegan restaurants, caused a bit of controversy earlier this year when it was awarded a $50,000 federal Community Development Block Grant by the city council.

The chain also has a location in Upland.

The new Loving Hut is at 175 N. Indian Hill Blvd.

Eureka!Burger Claremont is open

While working on my day job, I happened to stumble upon reporter Wes Woods' Claremont Now blog post about Redlands-based Eureka!Burger planning to open in the former Three The Forks location in November or December...last year!

I had lost track of that story and I hadn't seen them post anything on Twitter, so a quick search online revealed that they did finally open about a month ago.

The Claremont location is the restaurant's third, after Redlands and Fresno.

So, West Valleyans, if you've been wanting to try Eureka!Burger, the wait is over!

The Claremont Eureka!Burger is at 580 W. First St.

Update: Eureka!Burger was David Allen's Restaurant of the Week just last week. Great minds, etc. Thanks to Facebooker Carl for lookin' out.

Loving Hut creates controversy in Claremont

Vegan restaurant Loving Hut has created a controversy in the college town, and it's not even open yet.

The city council last month awarded the restaurant a $50,000 federal Community Development Block Grant and many in the community are not loving the decision.

Reporter Wes Woods has done a great job documenting the controversy.

You can read his article here.

In the meantime, if you're curious to see what Loving Hut offers, you can visit the nearby Upland location, 903 W. Foothill Blvd., Suite B.
