So long Millie's, and thanks for all the chorizo and egg bowls

Sad news for fans of Millie's Restaurant & Bakery.

The Fontana Millie's, formerly at 17039 Valley Blvd., has closed.

The restaurant has a couple of signs posted inside the front window saying that the location is permanently closed and to visit the Millie's in Covina, nearly 30 miles away.

That leaves the only Inland Empire Millie's in Hemet, at 2020 E. Florida Ave.

I have an odd story about Millie's.

A while back, I cleaned some viruses off my aunt's computer, and as payment, she asked where I liked to eat so that she could get me some gift certificates.

At the time, I was kind of on a Mimi's Cafe kick, so that's what I told her.

She got things a little mixed up and I ended up with gift certificates to Millie's.

Let's just say that I got to know the Riverside and Fontana locations for a while.

Of course, they're both closed now, which makes me a little sad.

Thanks to reader Steve, who emailed us to let us know about the closure.

Smiles Sweet Shop is open

Looking for a little something sweet?

You might want to head to Fontana, where the Smiles Sweet Shop has opened at 15074 Foothill Blvd., Unit E.

The bakery, run by John-Mark and Kimberly Agallar, opened June 25.

Smiles Sweet Shop specializes in what they call Cheesecake Winks, or small cheesecakes with various toppings.

Another specialty is the Graham Cracker Grin, which is a graham cracker, topped with caramel, then topped with different types of chocolate, nuts and fruit.

They also sell mini pies, specialty bottled sodas and Hawaiian coffee.

The bakery is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

Reporter Kristina Hernandez spotlighted the bakery in an article you can find by clicking here.

For more information, visit the bakery's website here.

Roundup of recent closures

Even as there are new restaurants popping up here and there, closings also seem to be happening fairly regularly.

In downtown San Bernardino, long-time (since 1953) establishment Nena's Mexican Restaurant (their website is still up), 642 N. D St., has ceased operations.

The restaurant, which was sold by Nena herself a few years ago, had recently only been open at lunchtime and for special events.

At one time, the eatery was home to many a county employee birthday lunch. We used to do the same for Sun staffers, too, when we were still located downtown.

I can think of only three other sit-down restaurants downtown -- Molly's Cafe, Yum Yum, and Mardi Gras -- when once there were many.

Speaking of Sun staffers, former Sun staffer Julie Farren wondered about a frequent haunt, Casa Sanchez, at 265 W. Highland Ave., in San Bernardino.

The restaurant closed abruptly and already has a real estate advertising banner stretched across it.

Signs advertising restaurant specials still hang in the window, but nothing to indicate why they closed.

So, if your dream is to own an old-school IHOP restaurant, now's your chance!

Jeff Gordon's Drive to End Hunger Chevy coming to Fontana

On March 27, Jeff Gordon will be racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana.

However, you'll be able to get up close and personal with his car the Thursday before the race.

Jeff Gordon's No. 24 Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet will be displayed from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 24 in the parking lot of the Ralphs at 14574 Base Line in Fontana.

Fans will be able to pose for photographs with the car.

Gordon has teamed up with the AARP to raise awareness of and help combat senior hunger.

Accordingly, the appearance will also be a food drive. Fans are asked to bring non-perishable food to donate.

Donations will go to the Second Harvest Food Bank serving San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

And if you want to make a monetary donation to the Drive to End Hunger, simply text HUNGER to 50555 to give $10. You don't have to wait until Thursday to do that.

For more information on the Drive to End Hunger, click here or visit their Facebook page here.

Moonshine meetup in Fontana, Temecula

NASCAR Hall of Famer Junior Johnson will be making a pair of appearances in the Inland Empire this week.

So what does this have to do with Dine 909?

Johnson is also part owner of Piedmont Distillers, a North Carolina-based craft spirits distillery.

In other words, he's a moonshiner.

He's meeting with fans in celebration of both the introduction of his legal moonshine here in California and this weekend's final Pepsi Max 400 at the Auto Club Speedway.

He'll be autographing bottles of Junior Johnson's Midnight Moon and the limited-edition Midnight Moon Hall of Fame Collector's Series at Stater Bros. markets in Fontana and Temecula.

From 4 to 6 p.m. tomorrow (October 5), Johnson will be at the Stater Bros. in the Sierra Crossroads, 11225 Sierra Ave. in Fontana. From 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday (October 6), he'll be at the Stater Bros. at 31813 Temecula Parkway in Temecula.

For those of you unfamiliar with moonshine, "Midnight Moon is made from American corn, 80 proof and triple-distilled to deliver an ultra-smooth, clean tasting spirit that is often preferred over the world's best vodkas," according to a press release.

The Midnight Moon Hall of Fame Collector's Series was created to commemorate Johnson's induction into the inaugural class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame earlier this year. Each of the six unique bottle designs features a collage of historic photos that document his racing career.

Drinking and driving don't mix, but Johnson is proof you can have a successful career in both.

I'm sure Edie, the Egg Lady, would be aghast at the recent turn of events involving her precious ova.

But we here at Dine 909 want help calm your fears over the Salmonella outbreak.

Let's look at the facts. Nationwide, an estimated 1,300 have been sickened, including as many as 60 people in Los Angeles County.

No cases have been reported in San Bernardino County.

A total of a half-billion eggs from two Iowan producers (initially Wright County Egg, now Hillandale Farms) have been recalled. This represents less than one percent of all U.S. eggs.

The recalled eggs were sold in California and 13 other states: Arkansas, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin.

The basic advice?

If you've got eggs that have been recalled, don't eat them!

Simple enough.

Return them to the store where you bought them for a refund.

Click here to read Jim Steinberg's story on the recall and to find out which brands are affected.

Follow the jump to see San Bernardino County's press release regarding the recall.

Update: A Fontana company is recalling 300,000 eggs related to the outbreak. Click here to read the story.

Lunch With 'Lainey turns 90

Our weekly lunch reviewer Elaine Lehman has written her 90th review -- congratulations, Elaine!

Elaine is a diner after our own heart...she loves to find cheap and good places to eat here in the Inland Empire.

The topic of her milestone review? Tio's Mexican Food, 16953 Sierra Lakes Parkway, Suite 114, Fontana, in the same center as Mimi's Cafe.

We always look forward to Elaine's reviews every week, even if she's never invited us to join her.

Perhaps she'll ask us to number 100.

Read this week's review here.

Elsewhere in the paper today, we get David Cohen's semi-annual look at highlights from San Francisco's Fancy Food Show.

Loaf Love at Fontana Fiesta Foods Friday

After lamenting the lack of Loaf Love for the Inland Empire a few months back, it turns out that Tillamook will indeed be bringing some Loaf Love our way this week.

They've added two several Inland Empire dates to the Loaf Love Tour:

 • Noon to 7 p.m. Friday (March 19), Fiesta Food Warehouse, 16950 Foothill Blvd. (at Sierra Avenue), Fontana
 • Noon to 7 p.m. Monday (March 22), Fiesta Food Warehouse, 1578 W. Baseline (at Medical Center Drive), San Bernardino
Update: More dates have been added! Click here to see them!

It seems the modified VW microbuses will be flooring it in Fontana and steering into San Bernardino after all.

Unfortunately, no other Inland Empire dates appear to be scheduled during this "Los Angeles" leg of the Loaf Love Tour.

Coincidentally, on our trip to Costco the other day, we purchased some of that delicious Tillamook vintage white sharp Cheddar cheese. Mmm...tangy!

Did Dine 909 have any part in bringing the Loaf Love Tour to the Inland Empire? We'll probably never know, but we'd like to think so.

You can thank us silently as you sample that yummy Tillamook cheese.

Thoroughly modern McDonald's opens — deals ensue

A new, modern-style McDonald's opened a week ago in Fontana (17017 Sierra Lakes Parkway, at Sierra Avenue).

Surprisingly, I'm lovin' it. It's a slightly smaller restaurant, without a Playplace. It's very modern inside and if it weren't for the menus and posted advertisements, you'd scarcely know you're in a McDonald's. Personally, I think it's a great direction for the company.
