Furcal to DL

| | Comments (1) |

Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal, whose stiff back has been slow to heal, will be placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 6. Furcal has had an MRI, which shows he has a strained lower back.

Furcal is expected to get a cortisone shot Tuesday.

Utility infielder Luis Maza is expected to be called up from Triple-A Las Vegas to replace Furcal. Maza, who has never played in the majors, is hitting .402 with a home run and 15 RBIs in 33 games. He is 6 for 11 in his past two games for the 51s.

...and this is why you give up a low-level prospect for Juan Castro when they had the chance instead of trying to get him on the cheap. Hu doesn't belong in the Majors yet, LaRoche is languishing...errrrrr rehabbing, Nomar and Furcal can't stay healthy (no surprise), Young can't field (no surprise), Abreu can't GET healthy or speak a lick of English apparently (again no surprise)... and now you're stuck calling up some guy I've never heard of until now whose last name looks like what most Jewish people eat at Passover and then declare your new backup shortstop is your All-Star CATCHER!!!

It doesn't take genius to know that when you have all this facing your club, which has the 3rd or 4th highest payroll in the league, you give up someone to get a good defensive shortstop, another veteran presence who's a clubhouse mensch for all of these reasons.

This guy Colletti doesn't seem to know what he's doing.
