Barry being Barry

The Giants had some contrived pregame ceremony to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their move West, and they brought out a bunch of their old outfielders. There was a lot of pregame speculation about whether Barry Bonds was going to show up. Well, he did, and he actually stepped to the microphone in front of the pitcher’s mound, pointed to the Dodgers dugout and said something along the lines of how it felt weird not to be in uniform when the Dodgers were here. Then he said something like, “I beat you before and I WILL beat you again,” although that might not be the exact wording. Seemed to be implying that he’ll play in the majors again. … It is a beatiful night by the bay. I wish the Dodgers would play these 6 o’clock games on Saturdays, because it’s a perfect time of day. It’s a little chilly here, but not as much as it was last night. But there isn’t a cloud in the sky, and much of the field was bathed in early-evening sunlight as the game began.

Kemp’s arm in center is the only reason this game is tied. If Juan Pierre was out there we’d be losing. Hopefully Joe takes that into account.

  • Buddy

Well, that’s Barry being vindictive because he’s not playing and is still angry.

He’ll never play in MLB again.

    BARRY SUCKS! BARRY SUCKS!

  • Buddy

No, Barry didn’t suck. He hit over 700 home runs and had an outstanding slugging and on-base percentage. It takes some degree of talent to do that no matter what kind of substance he may or may not have been using. Hence, your argument of “barry sucks, barry sucks” generally has no credible credence, especially among informed baseball analysts.

The primary reason he isn’t sporting a uniform right now is this little indictment hanging over his head right now and the distraction he would cause in any clubhouse given the tumultuous nature of his persona.

And I’m guessing steroids had nothing to do with his breaking the HR record…he was a good hitter up until he started juicing… he brings shame to the game.

  • ManRam

can someone explain why we’re playing the infield in with 1 out in the 10th? the ball hit by rowan would have been straight at the second baseman in the normal position for a sure double play. joe…what are you doing to us? this was for first place! shameful!!!!!

  • phillydodger

i know its only one game, but this had tons of implications, esp against the dreaded giants, besides first place. kent hits a dramatic go ahead HR and even calls out the Giants dugout and then Broxton comes in blows up…

Geez, why does a guy who throws 100 mph pitch AWAY?!? the first two batters did exactly what you’re supposed to…swing and go with the pitch…

he needs to develop a changeup badly…or perhaps his mental makeup isn’t up for the closer…can you imagine this guy in the playoffs on the road?!?

right now, kuo is my closer.

I don’t understand why the infield was in in that situation. Torre should have at least put SS and 2nd at double play depth and kept the corners in. Rowand isn’t a fast runner and he hits the ball hard.

  • ManRam

I’m sorry but this is a major mistake. The press needs to be all over this or they’re not doing their job. INFIELD IN? Joe needs to be taking naps with Tommy in the 4th inning in the crowd!. This cannot happen! Screw the bird crap…what’s the story!

  • ManRam

kuo should have been pitching to roberts in the 1oth…lefty lefty…come on. a high school coach could do better!

why is andrew still playing on our team…give me a break!

    I’m pissed!

  • Brooklyn Dodger

Broxton came into this game 7 for 7 in save opportunities. I’m not happy, but this sort of thing is going to happen on occasion. Actually, before Roberts opened with the base hit, I was telling myself Broxton needed to throw his slider with the count at two strikes, given that he had been throwing nothing but fastballs. However, he could have just as easily hung a slider, and I would have been wrong.

As for Broxton needing a change-up, I’m sure that’s something he will seek to develop over time. Either that, or perfect the split finger that he’s worked on in the past. Let’s not forget that he’s only 24, and no doubt there is still plenty of room for the refinement of his game.

As for Kuo becoming the closer, I doubt if that would work. He’s valuable in the role he’s currently occupying, and probably would have a problem in dealing with the rigors of closing on a regular basis.

If there is any blame for this loss, it belongs to the Dodgers offense which squandered opportunities earlier in the game to break it open. The inability to tack on runs is one of this teams greatest weaknesses, and results in an inordinate number of close games that place enormous pressure on the bullpen day after day. Despite working under this handicap all year long, the bullpen as a whole has turned in admirable work.

Yes, the Dodgers lost an opportunity to occupy first place by themselves. If they’re deserving of winning the division, then they will have to do what good teams do, shake off this loss and go to work tomorrow.

this blog is a joke..it takes an hour to post! Is this russia? I have to look at other sites for the lineup?

  • Tony Jackson

ManRam, are you using AOL? It takes an hour to APPEAR if you’re using AOL (which I use). But if you/I post something, even if it’s on AOL, it usually appears on other ISPs immediately (Internet Explorer). It just won’t appear on AOL for a while. Strange, I know, but I have stopped trying to figure out the whys of this thing. Just roll with it.

Steroids or not Barry Bonds is the best player I have had the chance to see play in my 26 years. And if anyone is going to talk sh*t on Bonds, they better be doing the same thing about Gagnes’ consecutive save streak. If not, they’re a hypocrite.

Even before the ‘roids, Bonds was a Hall of Famer, and no matter how strong someone may be, it takes a hell of alot of talent to accomplish what Bonds did hitting, and fielding wise. Him being an asshole not withstanding.

Barry should be a first ballet HOF’er. 8 time Gold Glover, 12 time Silver Slugger, Barry Bonds is without a doubt one of the greatest baseball players of all time. Steroids may make someone stronger, but they didn’t make them a better hitter. Power wise maybe, but not all around.

  • Public_Enemy#1

He cheated the game, he is not gonna get elected into the HOF, he may have been a HOF’er but he lost his chance when he first began to take steroids. As for Gagne, I no longer respect him nor his accomplishments. Any baseball player who takes steroids is compromising the integrity of this sport, Barry Bonds was and still may be a good hitter, but if someone like Pete Rose is banned from the hall, so should BARRY!!!

  • Buddy

Let’s get over this Bonds nonsense. We really won’t hear about him until his trial anyway.
