The boys lost this one in the bottom of the fourth, when they got runners to second and third with one out and left them there when Juan Pierre and Matt Kemp struck out in succession. Although they still led 3-1 at that point, there was a sense of impending doom after that, and it held true. The very shaky Jonathan Broxton imploded again in the ninth, hitting Matt Holliday to begin the inning, and it led to what hitting a batter to begin an inning almost always does. The Dodgers committed four errors in a game for the first time in more than three years, and it is worth noting that all four of them were committed by catcher Danny Ardoin, third baseman Russell Martin and first baseman Casey Blake -- all three of whom were part of an elaborate musical chairs in the starting lineup that all resulted from manager Joe Torre wanting to sit James Loney because Loney was 1 for 15 against Jeff Francis. This is one instance where Torre might have outsmarted himself. ... Dodgers fall to 64-62 and are now two games behind the Snakes, the biggest deficit they have faced in two weeks. It all lends an undeniable touch of urgency to tomorrow's series and homestand finale, especially given that the upcoming, 10-game trip begins with a dicey, four-game series in Philly.
the more i see of what is happening, this team is in shambles. There is no direction, hitters are in positions that overwhelm them. New players are added that are good but no one to protect them as they hit. Blake is hitting in 8th and can produce but that is a slap in the face for him. Looney is batting in 5th and can't even hit the ball. looks more and more like jones. They walk or pitch around manny to get to looney and he is becoming an automatic out. They need to sit him for awhile until he decides he needs to start hitting and help the team to win. They have had a hot 1,2 in kemp and ethier and that is screwed up by putting pierre in and benching ethier, who can hit to all fields. and the pitching sucks..starters can do only 5 or less innings and collettis (dime a dozen middle relievers)are shot. Honeycutt has no idea about his pitchers...the same ones who choked in the last years swan dive and no moves have been made because they have wasted their monies on future aarp recepients and playing games with minor league players. If you are going for young team, give them a chance...not abuse them and their talents...I have been a Dodger fan for over 60 years and this is the worse team i have ever seen assembled (thanks to colletti). If players don't want to be dodgers, pack their bags and move on. There are plenty of players that have been overlooked and that is because of management and their knowledge of talent.
Is it too late to claim Adam Dunn?
muzicman - I agree with much of your sentiment. I am a D's fan for over 45 years and this team has the look and feel of a .500 team.
They are now just 10-8 with Manny. The D-backs look like a team growing steady and stronger every day. The Dodgers are finding new ways to lose. Maybe it's the youth and inexperience, but now we have Kent, Manny and Blake - all post season veterans.
I am hoping for the best but the four game road trip to Philly followed by a trip to Arizona could put the D's 4-5 games back with only a month to play.

The last 2 games have been tough...hot and cold this team. Their offense and defense/pitching need to be in sync. They also can't be striking out LOOKING! I honestly believe they are better than the D-Backs overall. If they lose the west it's because they could not get it together, and not because of lack of talent. With the line up they have right now they SHOULD win the West with 8-10 games over .500. I honestly believe that. But they can't let teams under .500 come back because of errors, or continue to leave runners in scoring positions by striking out horribly. Torre, Mattingly lets get this team going!!!
Why didn't Ned block the Dunn trade by putting in a claim?
The only reason I can think of for Ned to fail to block a Dunn trade by putting a claim in for him would have to be some sort of “gentleman’s agreement” or a desire “not to be rude”.
Unless the Dogs were compensated for letting the deal go through–what Ned did is felony stupid! Absolutely no excuse for that kind of stupid! It’s the kind of stupid you just can’t fix!
If Dodgerland was a country, the season a military confrontation and the Drawbacks our political enemies, what Ned did would not only be felony stupid, it would also be treason!
In fact, he better be able to explain what he’s done to General Lasorda when he returns to inspect the troops!
In any event, he’ll have some serious ’splainin to do when his life is through and he must make an accounting to that Big Dodger in the Sky....

I think we all know the reason: We have a janitor in the GM's office, he doesn't know how to do the job. McScrooge needs to fire him now, it would help team spirit.
